Re-Vision St. John's

This is a thread to keep track of people who are struck by cars and trucks (and busses) while trying to walk or ride a bike or just move around in the @CityofStJohns in 2021

@robotpatch @ProfAvenarius @gbrentkeeping @Grand_Concourse Kids should have to ride on roads designed for 60km/hr because otherwise someone might *almost* get hit by a bike. This is how we become the “well-being province”.

@ProfAvenarius @gbrentkeeping @Grand_Concourse Exactly - the signs are doing nothing to prevent irresponsible cyclists from using the trails. Also let me correct you - "We built roads for *motor* vehicles."

Do you like new housing? Because neighbours sure don’t! Consider lending support for 85 units pretty close to a bunch of amenities. Now for a bit of traffic calming on Topsail…

We knew it in the 60s!

Good on the @CityofStJohns for adding art to Water Street this year but the bit on asphalt is literally on wheels so as to prevent it from having any permanent effect. A bit of paint would do wonders to signal the street as a place for people.

@ToniDray1 Yeah, there’s a big difference between being able to walk down the street and being able to walk to any of the places you need to go in the run of a day.

What are the chances anyone *in Galway*, let alone any other area, will be able to walk or bike to this place? Health is not isolated recreational facilities.

@abCoombes You need to cross four lanes and acres of parking to reach almost anything from the residential area. It’s business as usual at best, unfortunately.

@ReVisionYYT The plan for Galway is to be a walkable community, shopping, entertainment, walking trails, parks and now sports complex. There is also plans for a school up there. It might be feel isolated to other parts of the city but it won’t for that part of the community

Good thread by Josh. Also important to recognize “neighbourhood character” isn’t about character of built environment but (perceived) character of people. We know this because there’s no max house size, ie nothing to prevent single family houses as big as du-, tri-, fourplexes.

Here’s a neat little feature of the HTA most people have no clue about. Almost all intersections have legal crosswalks with all the same requirements of marked ones. Just pretend there’s a lil yellow/red light there (and stop, to be clear).

@patches_s Not enough room for acres of surface parking I guess? The site’s 75% bigger than the existing St. Clare’s, and only part of that one’s built up.
