In Saigon, roughly 7,000 U.S. Department of Defense civilian employees stayed behind to continue supporting South Vietnam as it faced an ongoing and fierce struggle against communist North Vietnam. On March 29, 1951, a homemade device exploded at Grand Central Terminal, startling morning commuters but thankfully injuring no one. In the following months, five more bombs were discovered at iconic New York landmarks, including the New York Public Library. This marked the beginning of a terrifying wave of attacks by the infamous Mad Bomber (later identified as George Metesky), who terrorized the city with over 30 bombs between 1941 and 1956. His targets were often crowded public spaces, yet remarkably, his devices caused relatively few injuries and no deaths—though they created widespread fear and gripped New York in anxiety for years. A fascinating (and ultimately successful) chapter in early criminal profiling: the bomber left detailed letters taunting police and demanding justice for a workplace grievance.
