As an AD, I constantly remind our coaches what a captain really is. It is not always your best player, even though that is the ideal. It is the player who lives out your program’s culture every single day. The one who holds teammates accountable, shows up and works, puts the team first, and does the little things right when no one is watching. A captain is not just a talented kid who makes plays. It is the standard everyone else should follow.

If your coach is being tough on you and demanding consider it a gift. They probably see some things in you that you don't see in yourself.

This isn’t everyone, but… There are a lot of you players who would have a far better college basketball experience playing at a lower level. Sometimes better cultures. Better fit. Better opportunities. Maybe even better coaching. I’m not here to crush dreams, but I hope you have truth tellers in your life and not only people supporting your dreams. You need both. But I’m a small college coach, so of course I’d be saying all that… 😑

As an AD, I try to remind everyone that winning is earned, not owed. When success becomes expected, it’s easy to lose the edge and forget the work it takes to get there. Don’t get spoiled with winning because it can be gone in a flash. People don’t always understand the sacrifice it took or takes to build a winning culture, but that’s what separates those who sustain it from those who don’t.
