Given the recent news that Liverpool might be looking at a new face to replace Arne Slot, it’s worth taking a look at Sebastian Hoeness. Hoeness is one of the few names linked with us recently, and definitely an interesting one. A brilliant coach both in and out of possession, with a strong possession based style on the ball and a regimented off the ball one with compactness and a willingness to press high. 1/

Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth, first 30 seconds of the game against Nottingham Forest. High M2M press all over the pitch, the result? they won the ball back in a really advantageous position. Winning the ball back in those areas with the quality of Liverpool attackers can be DEADLY.

Our understanding is that the majority of the players want a new manager in place at @LFC next season.

Final thoughts: Overall, Hoeness Stuttgart trends with what Liverpool fans have been accustomed to in the Klopp era. Sustained on ball presence with a varied and fruitful attacking style of play, a focus on counterpress and a structured defensive unit that makes us difficult to play against. What are your thoughts, Reds? END/

Pressing: Stuttgart are not reckless when it comes to their press. They tend to lean toward organized chaos, with a triggered press focused on collapsing the opposing team to one side in order to pick them off. They do subscribe to the idea of a counterpress, with an immediate focus to win the ball back upon losing it. This allows them sustained dominance on and off the ball, as well as affording them the idea of creating sustained attacking pressure. 6/

Off the ball: Shape: Hoeness tends to favor a 442 mid block staying compact between the lines, with an emphasis on forcing play wide and a focus on staying defensively organised. Due to the compact nature, they try to force the opposing teams wide in order to stop central progression. 5/

Positioning: Stuttgart focus on a compact central area, with the fullbacks operating with fluidity and a “one in one out” principle. For instance, if the RB inverts you would typically see the LB higher and wider. This creates movement and fluidity in the system, which aides in possession and ball retention, as well as adding players to the attack in order to create overloads. In addition to the fullbacks, the central attackers also operate with a similar focus, with this indicating a “one high one low” principle that drops one between the lines and one pushing and sometimes offering runs beyond the defensive line. Again, this creates constant movement off the ball which highlights the fluidity and desire to exploit and create spaces to play. 4/

Progression and Chance Creation: Hoeness tends to lean on central progression in the middle third, looking for those penetrating and line breaking balls into the attackers. There is a heavy focus on overloads and third man runs. This coincides with spells of smooth, tempo driven possession in which you’ll see Stuttgart pop the ball around with ease. Off the ball, you see a lot of rotations from the midfield and attackers, constantly looking to exploit between the lines and attack the half spaces, as well as some deep weak side runs which stretch the pitch high and wide. Due to the vertical nature of Stuttgart passing, it is not uncommon to see switches of play in which they exploit wide spaces close to the box, highlighting the variety in chance creation. 3/

On the ball: Build Up: Stuttgart have one of the most efficient build-ups in Europe, a team who is extremely comfortable on the ball, with a lot of patience to draw the opposing team out. Stuttgart typically build up in a 424 shape, with the front line pinning the opposition defenders high to open the spaces to progress the ball. Though it is not uncommon to see an inverted fullback to create and build out with a back 3 in a 325, indicating that Hoeness is adaptable and not beholden to a rigid approach. 2/
