Day 2. Update: I was wrong already.
Yesterday I said I’d reply less and stop being a reply guy.
Then I actually tested intentional engagement instead of spraying comments… and gained 100+ followers in a single day.
The problem wasn’t engaging. It was engaging without thinking.
Here’s exactly what changed:
1. Picked accounts, not random trending tweets. 15-20 accounts whose audience overlaps with mine.
2. Replied with real value first — fresh angles, forward-moving questions, or honest pushback. No “great point ”.
3. Engaged before posting anything of my own. First hour of the day = pure replies.
4. Stayed in the thread. Most people bail after one exchange. The 2nd/3rd reply is where you get noticed.
5. Targeted mid-size active accounts instead of huge dead comment sections.
6. DMed the best new followers who felt like real mutuals.
This didn’t feel like grindy reply-guy energy. It felt like real conversations that happened to grow the account.
Tomorrow I’m repeating it with the same accounts to see if it’s a spike or a pattern.
Anyone else realize “engagement isn’t the enemy — sloppy engagement is”? Drop your version below. Trying to separate signal from luck.
