Did you know that every state, including Washington, has laws requiring drivers to move over and slow down for emergency vehicles with flashing lights? This includes fire and law enforcement vehicles like fire trucks and police cars, but can also include tow trucks, utility/construction vehicles, and even buses. As a driver, when you see an emergency vehicle with flashing lights you should: • Slow down to a reasonable speed and, if possible, change into a lane not immediately adjacent to the emergency vehicle, or • Safely pull over and come to a complete stop, allowing the emergency vehicle to pass.

You can help by learning CPR and how to properly use an AED. The Renton Regional Fire Authority was a founding member of South King County CPR & First Aid, and offers free, uncertified classes several times a year. Prevent outdoor fires by practicing recreational fire safety. We receive several calls each year regarding recreational fires. Recreational fires are cooking fires and charcoal barbecues, campfires and bonfires in designated areas or on private property used for cooking, pleasure or ceremonial purposes.

Memorial Day is on Monday, May 25. This holiday often marks the unofficial start to summer and the grilling season! If you’re going to be firing up the grill this holiday weekend, follow the tips below to stay safe and avoid grilling mishaps: Read the owner’s manual and follow all assembly guidelines and safety procedures. - Only use barbecue grills outdoors and in an open space. Never use grills indoors or in an enclosed space as active grills create carbon monoxide—a toxic gas. - Set up your grill on a flat, stable surface that is located at least 10 feet away from your home and other combustible materials. - Use the proper tools when grilling, including long-handled barbecue utensils and flame-resistant mitts or gloves. - Never leave the grill unattended while in use. Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grill at all times. - Keep your grill clean by removing the buildup of grease and other food residues.

Did you know that May 16 thru 22 is National Boating Safety Week? This annual event is organized by the National Safe Boating Council and other organizations like the United States Coast Guard and is designed to spread awareness and encourage safe boating practices and regulations. Life jackets are the most essential element of boat safety. It is recommended that you always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. In fact, by law, all children 12 years old or younger are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when on a moving boat or vessel less than 19 feet in length—unless they are in a fully enclosed area (e.g., below deck or in an enclosed cabin). Remember that air-filled devices and foam toys like “water wings” or “pool noodles” are not suitable replacements for a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

Shout out to Captain Weaver, Engineer Carpenter, and Firefighter Engelhardt on Engine 313 today 📢 It's not often that you see an all-female engine crew! According to the national average, only about 5% of career firefighters are women. We are lucky to have more than twice the national average among our ranks. Way to represent, E313! 🚒 #womeninfire

When behind the wheel of a vehicle, anything that prevents you from focusing your full attention on driving is a distraction. Follow the safety tips below to avoid distractions while driving: · Do not use your phone or other hand-held devices. Consider turning these devices off and storing them somewhere out of reach while behind the wheel. · Be smart while snacking. Plan meals or snacks around trips to avoid eating while on the road. If snacks are necessary, avoid messy or difficult to manage foods. · Ensure that children or pets are seated securely before getting underway. If they need your care or attention, safely pull off the road and park the vehicle. Avoid reaching into the backseat while the vehicle is in motion. · As a passenger, speak up if you are worried the driver is distracted or focused on a task other than driving. Reduce these distractions by assisting with navigation or other similar tasks.
