Ashbery on Pollock and the importance of recklessness in our art ~ "Most reckless things are beautiful in some way, and recklessness is what makes experimental art beautiful, just as religions are beautiful because of the strong possibility that they are founded on nothing."

A scene from Looking for Richard, Al Pacino’s documentary about Shakespeare. This man, homeless, a beggar, someone most people would walk past without a second glance, someone not thought to be worth a dime, speaks about Shakespeare with remarkable clarity and perspective.

I'm relieved the left held on to Paris, but I'm just gonna say it, there's way too much coverage of it on French TV. This is what happens in a country where all the TV studios are in Paris, the journalists live in Paris, and nearly all the major politicians live in Paris.

Ricky Gervais on meeting Roy Keane: "It was like meeting a long lost brother. We immediately bonded over hating things. Lateness, leaf blowers, fireworks, and people in general."

@AnaKrivolapova The most attractive thing is for a person to do all that and fail. Just excites my utter admiration and a deep and nowadays necessary desire to protect them. I want to protect people.

The most attractive thing a person can do is isolate for a long time and emerge with something impressive. Music, writing, sculpture, whatever it is: shows competence, passing the marshmallow test, inner dialogue, patience, commitment, bravery in the face of potential failure

The calcuation how much of the MAGA base support Trump' war seems to be fatally skewed by researchers not counting MAGA members as MAGA anymore once they stop supporting him, so the figure is always 100%

It's raining. Always remember a right wing teacher (early monetarist) saying when it rains it always favours the right because the left (feckless, lazy, working class) can never find within themselves sufficient motivation to get out and vote, stick instead in front of TV etc

It's a fascinating modern problem in Western democracies: the useful vote vs the vote of conviction. I think it's a supple thing, neither one nor the other works in all times and all places. The useful vote leads to cynicism the vote of conviction to purism. Middle way.

It's also really dark. Much darker than when Mozart got his hands on it. It's about the right to depucelage.

I don't know how to explain it, human beings just expand and become more serious, they're not 'characters' any more they become your own passions, dreams, greatest aspirations, hopes.

If you enjoyed Louis Malle's riff on Chekov, Vanya on 42nd Street with it's conceit of taking place in rehearsal, Jacques Veber's Atelier Figaro, a riff on Beaumarchais' Marriage Figaro is really worth watching. France TV Replay.
