22-58 SINKING OF THE USS HARVEST MOON, GEORGETOWN In early 1865 the USS Harvest Moon, a 193-foot, 5-gun side-wheel steamer, was the flagship of Adm. John A. Dahlgren of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, U.S. Navy.

In Oct. of 1917, John “Dizzy” Gillespie was born in Cheraw, SC. An acclaimed and influential jazz musician, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1989. In 1976 he performed before the SC General Assembly documented in the Senate journal, part of the records at SCDAH.

22-65 ST. JOHN A.M.E. CHURCH 76 DUNCAN AVE, PAWLEYS ISLAND St. John A.M.E. Church was established in the spring of 1867 with Rev. Saby Green as the first pastor. GPS Coordinates: 33° 27.187′ N, 79° 7.428′ W

On October 21, 1917, John “Dizzy” Gillespie was born in Cheraw, SC. The youngest of nine children, he attended the Laurinburg Institute in NC, before moving with his family to Philadelphia in 1935.

In 1861, John D. Twiggs helped form the 1st SC cavalry regiment. Promoted to Lt. Colonel, he served in Virginia but was killed in Hamburg, SC, in 1864 after shooting Robert Butler, Jr.. SCDAH holds his papers, including this request to join the cavalry and the coroner’s inquest.

While you’re at the SC State Fair, stop by our exhibits in the Ruff Building (by the rocket): one is about events from 1775 in the early days of the American Revolution in SC, while the other is about the state flag. The documents are from the SCDAH holdings.

22-47 TOWN CLOCK/KAMINSKI BUILDING FRONT ST., GEORGETOWN, This Greek Revival market and town hall was built in 1842 after a fire destroyed many of the frame buildings on Front Street. An open-air market occupied the first floor and the town hall occupied the second floor.

21-39 LAKE CITY PRODUCE MARKETS/LAKE CITY BEAN MARKET 111 HENRY ST., LAKE CITY LAKE CITY PRODUCE MARKETS Lake City was a significant produce market as early as 1894, shipping fruits and vegetables to Northern markets until World War I.

Created to implement land reforms in post-Civil War period, the SC Land Commission purchased large plantations to subdivide and sell favorably to recently freed, landless African Americans. This plat from the SCDAH collection shows a tract in Williamsburg County. S 112153 Plats

In September 1729 the owners of the proprietorship of Carolina surrender their shares to the Crown formally ending the proprietary period in South Carolina. Attached is a petition to the Crown from the Lords Proprietors available on microfilm at SCDAH. Source: B800103

The Harold Boulware House Historical Marker dedication was held on September 16 with a crowd of well-wishers to celebrate the life and work of Harold Boulware. Mr. Boulware was pioneering civil rights attorney, served as chief council for the SC NAACP & a Richland County judge.

SCDAH holds a small set of hunting licenses under the Chief Game Warden’s Office which had responsibility for enforcing wildlife laws. Attached is a blank license from the 1920-1921 season.

Our thanks to all who attended our 4thPreserving Historic Cemeteries Workshop, our most successful yet. Esteemed speakers provided insights and knowledge, and we are appreciative of everyone’s participation.

#OTD in 1895, Frances Guignard Gibbes became the first woman to enroll for classes at South Carolina College, two years after the General Assembly allowed the admittance of women. Attached is the enabling legislation from the collections of SCDAH.
