I completely agree, contrary to what some people think, you can’t just overwhelm players by outhitting them, no matter how powerful your groundstrokes and serve is, that’s just ball bashing By “tennis IQ” I don’t just mean variety, I mean it’s knowing when to hit which shots when and also having control - for the most part- in critical situations and able to execute your shots, basically being “clutch” The biggest proof is Madison Keys, there is a reason she has barely spent time in her career in the top 10 with all her abilities, it’s because she doesn’t have a very high “tennis IQ” Look at the list below, sure the top 2 in Aryna Sabalenka & Elena Rybakina have the most ability and are in form right now, but we’ve seen them when they had this ability and weren’t ranked this high because their “tennis IQ” at that time wasn’t as great as it is now, and the rankings reflected it Some people will try to say that Ash Barty & Martina Hingis back in the day didn’t have this level of firepower and did it based on their “tennis IQ” and for that I’d say that actually proves the point because when they were playing they were number 1 or top 5 Basically the point is that the players with the highest “tennis IQs” ARE the highest ranked players & the ranking system does a brilliant job of filtering it out Some people will also say Karolina Muchova & Elina Svitolina have some of the highest tennis IQs and I’ll agree, and they are both top 12 in the rankings & top 5 in the 2026 WTA points race The bottom line is that if you have a very high tennis IQ, you will be very highly ranked, unless you are injured

Start from top of the rankings and stop at #5 and you will get a rough idea of who are the smartest players in no particular order. The whole discussion about tennis IQ has just become a participation trophy awarded to players without big weapons. Best players have the highest IQ

While his results during the early South American clay swing weren’t exactly what he wanted, the kid has evolved massively since then. You can tell he’s been a sponge while going toe to toe in those high pressure matches against the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz lately. He’s facing Gabriel Diallo, a guy who stands at 6'8" and has a massive serve that usually wreaks havoc on hard courts, but that weapon loses a lot of its bite on the slow, grueling clay of Monaco.
