🍀 Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀 Did you know the green sea turtle gets its name from the green color of its body fat? This color comes from a diet rich in seagrass and algae. These grazers help keep seagrass beds healthy, making them an important part of marine ecosystems.

The leatherback sea turtle doesn’t have teeth—but it does have a mouth full of backward-facing spines called papillae. 😮 These soft, flexible spikes line their throat and help them swallow slippery prey like jellyfish. 📸 Photo: Mdomingoa

🐢🔍 Can you guess what this is? Drop your guesses in the comments ⬇️ Is it: * Something a sea turtle left behind? * Just something from the beach? * A part of a sea turtle? Take your best guess before we reveal the answer tomorrow.

Turtle Rescue in Tortuguero! A juvenile green turtle, estimated to be one-year old, was found struggling offshore by local fishermenand delivered to staff at Sea Turtle Conservancy Tortuguero (Costa Rica). The small turtle was in critical condition, covered in oil, with breathing issues and limited movement. STC staff carefully cleaned the turtle and managed to improve its general condition. After being cleaned, the turtle was placed in a small tank with food, where its condition stabilized overnight until it was ready for release! Thanks to our hard-working staff and members of the community for saving this endangered turtle ❤️‍🩹 Photo and video credit: Daniel Bolom

Meet one of a sea turtle’s favorite foods: seagrass! Seagrass is a true flowering plant that grows underwater in shallow coastal habitats. These meadows are important feeding grounds for green sea turtles and provide shelter for countless marine species.

What’s in a name? 🐢 Eretmochelys imbricata literally describes the hawksbill sea turtle: • Eretmochelys = “oar-paddled turtle” (powerful flippers) • Imbricata = overlapping shell scutes 📷 EcoMar 👉 seeturtles.org/too-rare-to-we…

Once sea turtle hatchlings leave the nest, they often disappear from view—sometimes for years—until they return to coastal waters as juveniles. Loggerheads born on the U.S. East Coast have been tracked far out into the Atlantic, to a region known as the Sargasso Sea.
