Spring is bursting with color at the Gardens of Golden Gate Park. Cherry blossoms are blooming all over the Japanese Tea Garden and the final round of stunning late blooming magnolias are gracing San Francisco Botanical Garden.

The Garden’s spring colors are starting to shine! The Chagual or Chilean rock bromeliad (Puya alpestris) is bursting with vibrant color, catching the attention of visitors and birds alike. Be sure to stop by the Succulent Garden soon! 🌵

In celebration, we recreated photos of Eric Walther (first Botanical Garden Director who planted the magnolias here), and Claire Dunne (pictured in the paper in 1940 when the first magnolia bloom was seen) with today's Garden Director, Joe, and Interpretive Manager, Lindzy.

The first blossom of the tree was given to the herbarium at the California Academy of Sciences and is still housed there today, 86 years later!

On this day in 1940, the first Magnolia campbellii in the United States bloomed right here in San Francisco Botanical Garden! 🌸 People lined up to see this new-to-the-United-States plant.
