Smartwatches, Step Tracking, and How InStep Does Things Differently Hey everyone — we've had a few questions recently about smartwatch integration, so we wanted to share some context and where things currently stand. Unlike other fitness apps that simply sync your steps from health data (like Apple Health or Google Fit), we verify steps using a mix of motion data, sensors, and GPS from your phone to make sure the steps you’re logging are legit. Yes, it’s a bit stricter — but that’s exactly what makes our competitive challenges meaningful. We know many people prefer to use smartwatches to track activity, and we totally get that carrying your phone all day isn’t ideal for everyone. It’s something we think about a lot. That said, here’s where we’re currently at: * The level of step verification we can support with smartwatches is limited for now. Given the wide variety of smartwatch platforms and their reduced capabilities compared to smartphones—particularly around GPS and battery life—this is something that will take time to get right. But trust me we have some cool solutions that we are currently workshopping. * In the short term, we may experiment with less competitive, more motivational challenge types, where smartwatch data with less verification could be accepted. This would however differ from the current verified competition InStep is known for. We’re building InStep to reward real effort, and your feedback plays a big role in how we evolve. So yes, we hear you. Smartwatch support is a great idea—but it needs to be implemented in a way that keeps things fair, functional, and aligned with our mission. Until then, we’ll keep building, improving, and finding creative ways to get everyone moving. Thanks for being here — and keep the feedback coming.
