[An Example from the Salaf in Humility, Confidence, and Academic Rigour] It is mentioned in 'The Echelons of the Grammarians' of Az-Zubaidi, that it was said to Abu Ubaid [Al-Qāsim Ibn Sallām d. 222 AH]: "Indeed so-and-so says: 'Abū Ubaid has erred in two hundred words brought in his book {Al-Gharīb Al-Musannaf}.'" So Abū Ubaid was calm and forbearant, and he did not disparage the man in any way. Instead he said: "In the Musannaf are so many thousands of entries, so if I haven't erred except in this small quantity, then it is no large amount. But if this companion of ours would present himself so we could debate him regarding these 200 errors — according to his claim — perhaps we could have found valid justifications for them." Az-Zubaidi added: "Then I counted the number of entries in the book, and my tally arrived at 17,770 words." [Kitāb Tabaqāt Al-Mufassirīn lid-Dāwudi, 2/42] And Abū Mas'ūd Ar-Rāzī said: "Twelve or thirteen individuals impugned [Al-Hāfidh] Rawh ibn Ubādah, yet none of their speech was upheld." [Tahdhīb At-Tahdhīb, 4/391]

Criticisms are accepted based on specific criteria: 1. trustworthiness of the criticizer 2. proof The 'ālim is returned to for clarity and explanation; they are the inheritors of the Prophet sallallāhu 'alaihi wa sallam. They are a source of learning and knowledge. They are respected and loved, but this does not mean: 1. Their criticism is accepted without proof 2. Criticism is not accepted, even when there is proof, because the criticizer is not an 'ālim.
