I got custody of my little sister when she was 13. She’s 23 now. Yesterday she texted me, “Check your bank. And don’t argue.” 😭 I opened it… and she sent money for groceries. Said, “Buy something nice too. Not just bills.” Ever since she started working, she randomly sends rice deliveries to the house, pays the internet before I even notice it’s due, shows up with takeout on nights she knows I’m tired. They’re coming for me on this one but let’s debunk one of Nigerians’ favorite myths. A common advice many patients receive is: "Don’t take Vitamin C when you’re on antimalarial drugs." But scientifically, this is not entirely accurate. Here me out first Vitamin C is not the problem. Grapefruit is. Yes, grapefruit contains special compounds called furanocoumarins that interfere with drug-metabolizing enzymes. These can change how some antimalarials (like Artemether in Coartem) are broken down. 👉 So, it’s safer to avoid grapefruit and its juice during treatment. So why did this myth start? *ACTs kill Plasmodium falciparum partly by creating oxidative stress inside the parasite. *Vitamin C, on the other hand, is a strong antioxidant, it neutralizes free radicals. Mechanistically, this suggests it could reduce effectiveness. But here’s the reality: The oxidative stress from ACTs is mostly localized inside the parasite, not throughout the whole body. And in practice, available evidence suggests this interaction is dose-dependent, not a strict "never take Vitamin C" rule. So what’s the actual takeaway? • Taking plain Vitamin C? → Fine • High-dose supplements? For the first time in my life I saw a man with micropenis. What brought him to the hospital was actually worse than that.
