She is officially the youngest PhD graduate at UKZN and the first Black South African woman in SA to earn a doctorate in Occupational Therapy. Due to her exceptional research back in 2019, she was awarded the New Generation of Academics Scholarship Programme (NGAP) to begin her Doctorate journey🎓 All the hard work has paid off as today she is employed full time as a Senior lecturer at UKZN’s School of Health Sciences, (focusing on paediatric health), guiding Honors and Masters students. She has presented her groundbreaking PhD research to experts & scholars at local and international conferences🏅 Dr Ndaba, is also the Co-chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal branch of the Occupational Therapy Association of South Africa (OTASA)🏅 Wow. The first Black woman in South Africa to qualify as a medical doctor having taken her Hippocratic oath in 1947 - Dr Mary Malahlela-Xakana (1916-1981). She was also the first Black woman in South Africa to graduate from the University of the Witwatersrand. Dr Malahlela-Xakana opened her practice in Dobsonville and started seeing patients there. Tribalism Still a Problem in Limpopo Tribalism continues to be a serious challenge in Limpopo, as seen in the painful story of Mr. Mokgalaka A.A., a dedicated teacher from Makhuva village near Giyani. Mr. Mokgalaka, who teaches at Frans du Toit High School, won the National Best Teacher Award for the 2022/2023 academic year. He brought pride not only to Limpopo but to South Africa as a whole when he was selected to represent the country at the Global Teacher Prize event held in Dubai from the 9th to the 14th of February 2025. However, instead of being celebrated, he was completely ignored by the Limpopo Department of Basic Education. Despite his remarkable achievement, Mr. Mokgalaka received no financial or moral support to attend the international event. Upon his return, there was no recognition, no welcome, not even a simple meet-and-greet from the MEC for Basic Education. What makes this situation even more painful is that individuals who participate in reality shows like Big Brother Mzansi often receive grand welcomes from their provinces. Meanwhile, a teacher who is genuinely contributing to the future of the nation is sidelined, seemingly because he is Tsonga-speaking. If Mr. Mokgalaka spoke any other language besides Xitsonga, he might have been offered a strategic position in the department in Polokwane to help shape the future of education in this country. But instead, he remains unrecognised at home, while his work receives applause on international platforms.

PICS: Four boats worth millions that are supposed to be sent to poor communities in the Umkhanyakude district in northern KwaZulu-Natal to help pupils cross dangerous rivers to get to their schools are currently rotting away in Durban. The boats have been “rotting away” in an open space behind the Busamed facility in Umhlanga for months.
