@j4shah @_cllrcolleen That's a fair point, but I think it is reasonable to point out that historically, traffic engineers have often prioritized traffic flow over pedestrian safety - see our local roundabout designs for an excellent example of this strongtowns.org/journal/2019/9…

I'd point out there isn't unanimous agreement about best practices. For example City of Waterloo manager of transportation engineering did option eval and recommended 40kmh which council rejected in favor of 30. She listed several reasons 40 was better in her professional informed view, including potential for more accidents due to road rage at 30. Just one example where best practices aren't universally unanimous

Scott, this is inaccurate. People can disagree on the policy, but there has been significant consultation & conversation with city staff on cameras, speed limits & school zones. If we’re intentional about vision zero, it needs to be a 24/7 priority.
Scott Davey 🆗!@Scott__Davey

One of the (many) flaws in our two-tier municipal gov't. We weren't consulted & now some school zones have different speeding rules than other school zones... in the same city. And ticketing people for going >40kph at 11pm... on a Saturday? In July? therecord.com/news/council/4…

@j4shah @_cllrcolleen I do think we should collect more data, even for things like close calls. However, we don't need to wait for local injuries or deaths to accumulate to take action. Instead, we could proactively implement evidence-based policy that has worked elsewhere.

@Scott_C86 @_cllrcolleen Yikes, if there are (significant?) gaps in the data, how will we know if the actions we took made a difference? How will we be able to compare the efficacy of different actions? How will we even set goals? Hard to achieve Zero if you're saying that we cannot rely on the counting

@j4shah @_cllrcolleen While local data has value, there appear to be gaps in terms of what is collected. In the absence of that, I'd rather see the region take a proactive approach, based on best practices implemented elsewhere.

@Scott_C86 @_cllrcolleen Nope, I don't think that. I think my Q is part of the contextual puzzle, and that data is being omitted for some reason. You pointed to some other puzzle pieces, that's cool, but not the question I was asking. Your puzzle pieces don't negate the need to look at real local data.

@j4shah @_cllrcolleen You seem to think the region should base this decision solely on data that may not have been collected. This feels like a bad faith argument, particularly when I shared that there are other evidence-based advantages to lower speed limits (which you ignored)

@j4shah @_cllrcolleen It is also worth mentioning that there's a lot of data that isn't collected, such as close calls or perceived safety. These are real problems, and just because this data isn't collected, does not mean that they don't exist.

@j4shah @_cllrcolleen Lower speed limits in residential areas will help ensure the number remains at zero. In addition to reducing the severity and frequency of bad outcomes, there are other benefits, such as reduced noise pollution.

@_cllrcolleen In past 10 years, how many pedestrians have been hurt (or worse 😥) in Regional school zones at night (8pm- 5am?) wondering how much reduction we must achieve from where we are now to 0 in that time range & those locations. Data can help, I hope you can help point me to it 🙏🙏

@Glennlaine2 @robdeutschmann Data consistently shows that more people are choosing to getting around using different modes, and we should ensure they have the infrastructure to do so safely

@Scott_C86 @robdeutschmann Hi Scott, the Region comes up with the false narrative of unsafe streets, then they lower the speed limit and then photo radar. The regions spending is out of control. 500,000k on bike lanes during the pandemic? List goes on. Scott, your argument is childish.

@Glennlaine2 @robdeutschmann This is a ridiculous argument. Fortunately, there is a very easy way to avoid receiving fines from much-needed automated enforcement (don't speed)

@robdeutschmann It’s a train not a sacred cow. Your council banned election signs. Now your going set up single mothers and young families to fail with undesirable photo radar with exorbitant fines. You are aware that affordability is an issue. Wrap all the trains. Via and Amtrack does it.

A strange genre of signs is that of those that tell blatant lies. Any local, or anyone who looks at a map, could tell you that this trail does in fact go to both Tew's Falls and Dundas Peak

Safety should of course be a concern. But if we think e-scooters are dangerous, perhaps slightly more consideration should be given to the thing responsible for nearly all death, injury and property damage.

This was certainly much more fun than driving would have been. Also more sustainable and safer. However, it would seem that the experience is impacted by a rather excessive use of geofencing.

After I dropped my bike off at Ziggy's, I thought I'd continue on my journey by trying a Neuron e-scooter. Good fun, but there's definitely room for improvement 🧵
