@SSN_Portland Agreed, I'd like either one. Need successful hoops. A bit skeptical of the Denver addition, hopefully they really are going to commit to basketball. They have the $$ from what I've seen to have one of the highest budgets in the WCC even when you take hockey out of the equation.

@jimbasnight If he does leave I think SU would be an attractive job to a lot of active D1 coaches, too. Especially being in the WCC without Gonzaga, no Bennett at St Mary's, wide open going forward.

@SeattleURedSea Seattle U should hire Will Conroy, or R.J. Barsh as head coach, if they lose Victor. Getting someone who can make Seattle U appealing to locals who both of those guys are well-positioned, is going to be a major coup in the effort to market the program locally. Box office matters.

Have always wondered about the sustainability of #SMC's program once Randy Bennett inevitably left or retired. Gaels have a solid brand & name recognition thanks to Bennett, but never made the facility upgrades/gained the financial support you figured a program with their success might have.
Incredibly hard to break through as a CBB program in the Bay Area, so Gaels faced an uphill battle on that front. Very curious to see what happens next in Moraga.

So, the last Saint Mary’s win under Randy Bennett was against Gonzaga in their last trip to our gym.
Coughlin was right. Everything ends badly. Otherwise, it wouldn’t end.

Many years of turning down bigger offers, Bennett preferred to build Saint Mary's instead. He has finally succumbed, due to the power of Gonzaga leaving the conference, and NIL money simply never going to be enough in Moraga to compete with the Top 10 teams in the sport.

NEWS: Saint Mary’s is expected to promote associate head coach Mickey McConnell to head coach following Randy Bennett's departure for Arizona State, sources told me and @PeteThamel. McConnell played for Bennett from 2007-11 and has been on the Gaels’ coaching staff since 2019.

Sources: Arizona State is closing in on hiring Saint Mary's Randy Bennett as its next head basketball coach. The two sides are now working through the final terms of an agreement that would make Bennett the Sun Devils' next head coach.

@SeattleURedSea That was a tough task and it shows that against top talent you just can’t give them a double digit lead. Redhawks played them pretty even in the 2nd half but starting out down 11 was just too big of a hole to climb out of. Fun season for sure, already looking forward to 2026-27!
