There's an interesting form of luck that affects startups. You start a successful startup, then a few years into it some new innovation appears and you're uniquely poised to benefit from it. Smartphones did this for Facebook. AI seems to be doing it for Replit.

Startups are built by generalists. Then later scaled by specialists.

Ever wonder why big companies always lose to startups? Over ten years ago, I toured a Fortune 500 company’s HQ in the midwest. The CEO was very proud of his team’s new product releases. I asked him about their process for innovation and he showed me this board on their wall. Over 60 gates. Assuming a 95% chance of clearing each gate, a project would have just a 4% chance of ever reaching a customer! This is why startups win and power economic growth. We move fast, remove gatekeepers and let the in innovators iterate with customers while removing all the business gatekeepers from blocking the process.

@agazdecki We have seen this happen dozens of times at @StartupWeekend . At some , @sechrest has helped 30% get to revenue in the weekend. Some have even gone on to get funded by @Seattle_Angel This is worth the practice. Low downside, high upside.

You can launch a startup in a weekend. Create a landing page. Write the problem you’re solving clearly. To a really specific customer. Reach out to people for calls. Try to get some precommitted sales. Validate your product before building. Not easy but not impossible.

Build an audience before a startup. You’ll have an “unfair” distribution model ready to go which increases your startups chances of success. How? - Create a podcast - Post on social - Write a blog - Make YouTube videos - Be yourself - Be consistent It ain’t rocket science.

When your startup speaks to everyone you end up speaking to no one. When your startup tries to solve everyone’s problems you solve none. Be specific about who you serve and solve one problem really well.

I gave GPT-4 all the info I have about a startup: - All of my sloppy meeting notes - Bullet points extracted from emails w founder - Deck data extracted by AI - parts of the AI generated memo based on URL Reorganized and consolidated into one easy to read memo 🥹
