Responding to the attack on Prison Officers at HMP Isle of Wight a spokesperson for the Prison Officers’ Association said: “This is a horrific attack on Prison Officers at HMP Isle Of Wight. Our immediate thoughts are with those who have been injured and their colleagues and families. Appalling attacks like this are occurring all too frequently. The POA has repeatedly raised safety concerns with the Government and the Ministry of Justice. The POA have had without prejudice talks with the Deputy Prime Minister and we are confident of making progress with HMPPS to reestablish specialist local response units and roll out of non-lethal Tasers to those specialist units based in long term high security establishments. Is it going to someone losing their life before Prison Officers are given the protection they need?”
