If you know someone whose courage deserves to be recognised, please consider submitting a nomination. The closing date for nominations is 30 April 2026.

I would encourage people to consider nominating someone in their community who may be worthy of this recognition. Under the Act, a “deed of bravery” is defined as an effort to save a life involving personal risk.

Nominations are now open for the National Bravery Awards. These awards were established in 1947 by Comhairle na Míosa Gaile (the Deeds of Bravery Council) to recognise and honour individuals who risk their own lives to save the lives of others.

After the President of Ireland laid a wreath the 1916 Proclamation was read by a member of our Defence Forces, followed by the raising of the Irish Flag over the GPO.

At the State Commemoration for the 110th Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising with the President, Taoiseach and Tanaiste.

At Banna Strand, the historic landing of Roger Casement alongside Robert Monteith and Daniel Bailey was also commemorated. The event, attended by President Michael D. Higgins, recognising the significance of the Kerry landing in the wider story of the Rising.

As part of the Government’s all-party consultation group on commemorations, it was meaningful to see the community come together to remember the 1916 Rising in such a thoughtful way.

The 365 Garden of Remembrance was organised and opened in 2016 to honour the role of women in the 1916 Rising. It was dedicated in particular to Rosalie Rice, who helped send the coded telegram from Kerry to America informing John Devoy that the Rising had started.

In 2016, an Irish oak tree was also planted at United States Capitol on Capitol Hill with the support of members of Congress, creating a lasting symbol of the shared history between both nations

Working with CongressmanBrendan Boyle, we helped secure the inclusion of the Irish plaque. The proposal included text from the Proclamation and references to Thomas Francis Meagher, recognising the historic links between Ireland and the United States.

As a member of the Government’s All-Party Consultation Group on the Decade of Commemorations, working with members of Congress & the Senate in Washington DC to ensure the centenary was marked in the US the only country referred to by name in the Proclamation of the Irish Republic

Each school received a National Flag flown from 3 the Mall, Waterford where Thomas F Meagher flew the Irish Tricolour for the first time and a copy of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, connecting a new generation directly with the ideals of Easter Rising.

In March 2016, as a member of the Government’s All-Party Consultation Group on the Decade of Commemorations, I had the privilege of participating in a historic moment in Croke Park. students and teachers from across the state gathered there for a unique national ceremony.
