For example—just to give a rough comparison for non-Thai speakers—it’s like saying “break” as “bake,” “brown” as “bow,” or “great” as “gate.” Close enough, but technically not quite there. Now, about ร (R) vs ล (L). In theory, they’re distinct sounds. In practice… let’s just say they’ve become very good friends. 😅 I’d argue that a large majority of Thais pronounce them almost identically, often defaulting to an “L” sound because it’s simply easier in casual speech. Personally, I only make a conscious effort to distinguish them when I’m doing professional interpretation—otherwise, my tongue also chooses the path of least resistance. 😂 That said, even with these “shortcuts,” communication isn’t really affected. Context does most of the heavy lifting, so people generally understand each other just fine. And because of that, there’s little motivation to “correct” these habits in everyday conversation.
