On May 6, 2026, Ondo Finance, Kinexys by J.P. Morgan, Mastercard, and Ripple completed the first near real-time cross-border, cross-bank redemption of a tokenized U.S. Treasury fund. Four institutions, one settlement. The chain underneath that transaction was @base.
That detail gets buried in the RWA coverage because the headline is always the asset class, never the infrastructure. Tokenized Treasuries crossed $12.88 billion in on-chain value by April 2026, up from $21 billion total tokenized assets at the start of the year to $29 billion by April. Ondo's OUSG and USDY together hold over $700 million across 12 DeFi integrations. The growth numbers are real. What's less discussed is that Base is quietly becoming the settlement layer for the institutional transactions that actually matter, not just the liquidity pools.
The structural position here is different from TVL accumulation. TVL can rotate. A cross-border Treasury redemption involving JPMorgan's Kinexys network running through Base is an institutional workflow, and institutional workflows are sticky. When a bank's compliance team approves a settlement rail, they don't switch it monthly for better yields.
Coinbase has been vertically integrating toward this moment for years. Base as the technical substrate for a JPMorgan and Mastercard settlement transaction is what that integration actually looks like in practice.
