The no-bullshit version: - Catherine Blaiklock posted a photo of Shazans Peri-Peri Baby Chicken (sold at Tesco) that carries both the Red Tractor “Certified Ingredient” logo and HFA Halal certification. She calls it a direct contradiction because: • She claims Red Tractor demands an irreversible stun (animal cannot regain consciousness). • HFA Halal uses a reversible stun (low-voltage electric, animal could recover if not slaughtered immediately after). Her conclusion: the product can’t honestly carry both marks. Reality check: Red Tractor’s own public rules (straight from their website) say: • Every animal for Red Tractor meat must be stunned before slaughter — no exceptions, including religious/Halal slaughter. • They explicitly allow Red Tractor meat to also be labelled Halal as long as it was pre-stunned. Standard Red Tractor certification accepts reversible stunning methods (the exact kind HFA requires). Only their “enhanced” tier pushes stricter irreversible stunning. The Shazans product is using the standard tier, so it complies with Red Tractor’s actual published standards. HFA confirms they only approve reversible electric stunning (minimal amperage, animal must still be alive for the throat cut). So the dual labelling is perfectly legal and routine under current rules. Red Tractor knew this when they wrote their standards. If Blaiklock has a private email saying something stricter, it doesn’t match what Red Tractor publishes or what actually happens on the production line. That’s it. No grand scam in the post — just two certification schemes that overlap on “stunned” but split hairs on how permanent the stun has to be. The chicken is pre-stunned Halal chicken sold under a welfare label that allows it. If you don’t like that setup, the real issue is the rules themselves, not this one pack.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ - So not only are they shoving this shit all over our meat section they are as usual being very slippery about it.
