So much talk about tactics/aggression level etc for Swiatek but ultimately her biggest issue is simply that she doesn't execute anywhere near as consistently as she did 2022-24.

Sure, lots of great players did worse there. But plenty did much better there (Nadal, Swiatek, Evert, Henin, Seles, Kuerten, Bruguera, Gaudio). Were they just too stupid to capitalise on the 'easier' tournaments?

The RG narrative in particular developed somewhat from the anglo dominance of tennis narratives. Great American/British players struggling to convert their other surface dominance there.

@pef_bam It’s not really statistical analysis. It’s theory. It can apply to any sport. What determines how hard a competition is is the level of competition, not the conditions or environment.

@SlidingBackhand This is a very niche statistical analysis, but yes, I do agree

@College88358391 What you’re describing is something that suits certain play styles. Whether or not it’s more difficult depends on the strengths and weaknesses of a player. You cannot describe it as being more difficult overall

@SlidingBackhand Clay is “harder” because the conditions make the ball travel slower through the court. Less winners, less aces, longer points, longer match times. it’s objectively harder

Could be wrong but gonna assume that Novak telling the camera operator "For god's sake, make some space" happened while TNT was on commercial

@tanya_ghosh15 In what way did it nerf them? Nole has made QF in 19 of the last 20 editions. Clearly not that much ‘harder’ for him. It basically only nerfed them against one player

@SlidingBackhand Honestly not a Rafa fan at all, he was my least fav of the big three. But RG makes it impossible for the whole draw to be top notch because it is so freaking hard!! Ofc he was a natural but the fact that clay repeatedly nerfed Roger & Nole only won 3 is just proof..

@Adridri32 @tennisabstract Yes good shout. Tsitsipas was considered the most likely player on either side to make the final because of the lopsided draw, but lost to Rune. By the R16/QF stage, the four biggest favourites were all on the top half.

@SlidingBackhand @tennisabstract Maybe 2022 at RG there was literally everyone on one single side (Nadal, Djokovic, Alcaraz), Ruud was the finalist on the other side (and old cilic was the semi finalist against ruud if I remember it well) , but with no huge references at that time

Was wondering even during the match if there is some slam related anxiety he feels which is contributing to these health issues he's having at the majors. 2024 Wimbledon against Medvedev he had dizziness and it wasn't especially hot conditions.
Ben Rothenberg@BenRothenberg

Sinner says he woke up not feeling great, and was more affected by low energy than the non-crazy midday heat. “It was warm, but it was OK. It’s not like I was dying because of the heat.” He’s played and won a ton this spring. “Now I need, really, some time off.” #RolandGarros

Ironically this result probably increases Sinner's chance of doing the Calendar Masters

Do you think Francisco knows his brother just knocked out Sinner?

So not sure we can treat it as the biggest upset ever compared to matches that occurred in more normal circumstances.

From a pure tennis standpoint this looks like the biggest upset ever, especially from the 6-3, 6-2, 5-1 scoreline. But we knew beforehand that the heat was a possible meddling factor, and it played out to be the primary cause of the upset.
