Last time a Pakistani general went to another country to negotiate on behalf of the US was in Afghanistan in 2001. The then ISI chief met the Taliban supremo Mullah Omar and is reported to have told him to not give in to the US demands and to fight it out for the glory of Islam. Now once again a former ISI chief and current army chief of Pakistan who was called "THE DECEIVER" in the academy and who is reputed to being very close to IRGC and a fanatic Islamist mullah to boot has taken a mission to Tehran. On the day he returns from Tehran, Iran announces defiance of US and decides to close the Strait of Hormuz. Is this a negotiating position or are they daring the US to attack and get sucked into what Prof Pape calls escalation trap? Did Munir finger Iran to up the ante or was he playing genuine broker?
