The worlds largest offshore solar - by a margin. China 🇨🇳 has just commissioned the world's first gigawatt-scale offshore solar project in Shandong province. At 1 gigawatt it is displacing over half a million tonnes of coal. The panels are mounted on steel platforms that are fixed to the seabed with steel piles. Each platform is 60m long and 35m wide and the facility has a total of 2,934 of them. It is designed to withstand wind, waves, tides and even seasonal sea ice. It's also "aquavoltaics" – combining solar with fish farming, enabling dual use of valuable coastal space. The offshore conditions deliver 5-15% higher output thanks to cooler temperatures and sea-surface reflectivity. lnkd.in/e6mxP2qa
