After 47 days on hunger strike, the pro-Palestinian prisoners' protest in Britain has entered a serious situation; there is now an imminent danger to life. Sinn Féin has implored the British Secretary of State, David Lammy MP to directly engage with the pro-Palestinian prisoners and their legal representatives. The British government must act immediately to ensure that this crisis is resolved before any of the young people die, or incur permanent harm to their health and well-being. The human and legal rights of the prisoners must be fully respected, including their need for unrestricted access to medical care.

This government has a responsibility for the welfare of prisoners. That includes those on hunger strike. I am utterly dismayed by their unconscionable lack of urgency to prevent a catastrophe.
