I just wanted to let you know that last year, I signed a traditional publishing deal with a US publisher for my middle-grade non fiction. My publisher is truly excited about this work. We finished edits this week. It will be out in Fall of 2026. I am a star boy!

We need to redefine "values and standards". They are not old-fashioned constraints. They are all that separates democracy from evil. RAF Northolt’s VIP building glistened smugly with dew. Beyond trimmed box hedges and tall flag poles, the sleek white hull of a Lear jet waited. At the foot of the steps a staff sergeant saluted, trousers creased sharper than a blade. Slowly the entourage boarded. Inside, settled in cream leather, the General spoke. Older, lean, still fit, face grizzled from war, eyes carrying its shadow. Junior officers listened, arms folded; a young aide tapped at his laptop. “The Church used to do it,” he said to no one in particular. “Daily services, Chaplain’s lessons every morning. Drummed into us, one way or another. He tapped his temple with two straight fingers. “Even the duffers got it.” He stared out across the runway as the jet taxied. “Bloody good thing too. Gave us a code. Something to hold on to. Christ knows what I would have done without it. His point has never been more valid. The Church’s commandments once formed the basis of our common law, the foundation of our morality, the framework of our lives. Their absence today, replaced by the relentless pursuit of economic survival and success, has left us without any consistent moral guidance. The Armed Forces, by contrast, still instill and enforce their values. Courage. Discipline. Respect for others. Integrity. Loyalty. Selfless commitment. These are not optional. They are lived. They mirror precisely what is missing from public life, from our politics, from international relations. A would-be ambassador who allegedly falsifies his vetting lacks integrity. A Prince whose links to the trafficking of young women remain unexplained shows a fundamental absence of respect for others. A President who uses office for personal financial gain lacks integrity and selfless commitment. A nation that abandons allies in need is disloyal. A Prime Minister who breaks the rules he imposed on others during a national emergency lacks discipline and integrity. A police force deployed for political ends that kills an innocent civilian demonstrates cowardice, indiscipline, and contempt for human life. When such figures lie and cheat to evade accountability, they reveal a profound absence of courage. It is the underlying absence of these values, often hidden behind the scandal of the moment, that hollows out democracy, weakens our security, and erodes our happiness. It drives the dark direction of modern geopolitics and lies at the root of much global suffering. We must name these failures plainly. We must remind ourselves what is at stake. Because these values are all that stand between us and evil. Link to the full story in comments.

I write under the name Julian DeVille. This is a pen name, chosen deliberately to shield privacy while offering readers a clear and consistent identity. The work must speak for itself. My fiction is shaped by the tensions of our age: the fragility of democracy, the rise of extremism, the seductive pull of populism, and the quiet, inexorable drift toward autocracy hidden in the small print of political agendas. At the heart of my writing lies a single question: what values do we still teach our children? Fairness, common decency, right and wrong, the very foundations our forefathers defended through two world wars. Courage. Discipline. Respect for others. Integrity. Loyalty. Selfless commitment. These are not relics to be debated away by sophists or marketing consultants. They are the moral architecture that has sustained civilised society for centuries. They are the basis of planetary security. And they demand to be defended. For too long we have taken our freedoms for granted, neglecting the hard physical power required to protect them. Now, as those freedoms are threatened, we must remember what matters, not just for ourselves, but for our children and our children's children. The integrity of politicians, the independence of our courts, military, and police, the freedoms of speech and the press, all must be subjected to relentless scrutiny if they are to survive subversion. I do not write to entertain. I write to educate, to unsettle, and to inspire. My stories hold up a mirror to society, raise difficult questions, challenge comfortable assumptions, and provoke thought in a culture that has, frankly, lost its way. The written word remains invaluable, even as screens dominate our attention. Words should be rich, descriptive, resonant; they should build vivid, authentic worlds that feel alive. They should carry cultural depth, so the narrative is not only compelling but meaningful. I have written three books. They will be revealed in the not too distant future. I look forward to sharing them with readers prepared to engage with the ideas they contain. For those who recognise the urgency of these questions, I invite you to follow this journey.

Arsenal are playing Palace tomorrow but Ekitike and Rice looking likely to rise in price tonight. I have £0.2m wiggle room on these moves, so I can afford to wait. Not ideal losing £0.2m but if Timber, Saka, or Rice got injured my plans would change… What would you do?

So, here's my latest dilemma. My first book comes in at 130,000 words, but whenever I seek advice from my beta readers who have read it, they beg me not to make cuts. Experienced writers I know say that it needs to be a shorter book to be accepted by the industry. Thoughts?

Finally I can reveal the thrilling book cover for BLOOD of BRIGANTIA! Between love and duty, Cartimandua wields the power of the gods. Chaos forged her. War crowned her. History remembers her name. The queen has risen. Let the reckoning begin. (I write historical fiction BTW!)

About the 1.5 million figure: it’s a guesstimate I’ve made based on some digging, as there are no recent accurate figures. Self-publishing has exploded, with Amazon publishing 91.5% of self-published books in the U.S. by 2018, jumping from 3,804 titles in 2007 to 1.42 million by then (WordsRated). Today, that number of titles is significantly higher!

Hey folks, publishing is so much tougher now than when I was first published! I feel for self-published authors facing over 1.5 million titles on Amazon this year; you’re struggling, and it’s real. If only it was just about the story. (See comments for info on that number) Check out this great post from @DreamEngineuk for self-publishers—it’s got the secret sauce for book launches!

The previous post mentioned 'Sales Velocity'. Velocity = how fast your book sells. It fuels Amazon’s Best Sellers Rank (BSR), pushing you to top spots in bestseller lists. A strong book launch drives velocity. Understand this before you self-publish your next book. A thread🧵
