Destyds het honderde Suid-Afrikaners na Afrika-lande gevlug. Hulle het niks gehad nie, het Fikile Mbalula, sekretaris-generaal van die ANC, onlangs opgemerk. Hul mede-Afrikane het vir hulle huisvesting, kos, wapens en militêre opleiding gegee sodat hulle die stryd teen apartheid kon voortsit. Vandag probeer duisende Afrikane, die meeste van hulle ekonomiese vlugtelinge, ‘n beter toekoms in Suid-Afrika vind. Hulle kry te doen met haatspraak en geweld terwyl die regering nie veel doen om hulle te beskerm nie. Sommige politieke partye soos die MKP, ActionSA en die PA skroom nie om immigrante vir propaganda-doeleindes rondom vanjaar se munisipale verkiesing te misbruik nie. “Ons is nie xenofobies nie, maar … ” Gewetenlose werkgewers misbruik onwettige immigrante ook deur hulle hongerlone te betaal. Daar is partye soos die EFF, DA en Rise Mzansi wat hulle stemme teen xenofobie hard laat hoor het voor die regering se flouerige reaksie wat een van pres. Cyril Ramaphosa se meer oninspirerende “familie-gesprekke” ingesluit het. ‘n Party soos die EFF doen dit selfs ten koste van homself omdat alles daarop dui dat die vloedgolf van xenofobie (eintlik Afrofobie) hom duur by die stembus te staan gaan kom. Intussen duur dreigemente van geweld voort terwyl ‘n organisasie soos March and March skynbaar kan doen net wat hy wil. ‘n Mens kry die idee dat die regering maar Gods water oor Gods akker laat loop omdat dit eintlik hy eerder as immigrante is wat in die beskuldigebank behoort te staan. Die regering het soos gewoonlik anderpad gekyk toe hy gewaarsku is dat daar ‘n krisis aan die broei is. Hy het gewag totdat dit in ‘n volwaardige krisis ontaard voordat hy (soos gewoonlik) net praat en nie veel doen nie, Die krisis kan nie net in ongekende geweld ontaard nie, maar kan Suid-Afrika se internasionale aansien baie skade berokken; veral in Afrika waar van sy politieke bondgnote en handelsvnnote met reg ontevrede kan voel. Dit is die regering se skuld dat daar te veel onwettige immigrante in die land is omdat grensbeheer al vir dekades lank verwaarloos is. Dit is vererger deur korrupsie en polisiëring wat veel te wense oorlaat. Die departement van binnelandse sake en die Grensbstuursowerheid probeer deesdae hard om die situasie te beredder, maar kry nie genoeg geld om alles te doen wat hulle moet doen nie. Dit is die regering se skuld dat die ekonomie stagneer en daar te min werk en ander hulpbronne is waarvoor Suid-Afrikaners met immigrante moet meeding. Dit is nou die regering se verantwoordelikheid om almal in Suid-Afrika veilig te hou. Die EFF-LP Carl Niehaus wil tereg in parlementêre vrae aan die betrokke ministers weet hoe ‘n organisasie soos March and March homself die reg kan toeëien om ultimatums aan mense te rig en hulle op straat voor te keer en op identiteitsdokumente aan te dring. Word daar teen hulle opgetree, word mense in hegtenis geneem weens intimidasie of dreigemente van geweld? Of staan die polisie net en toekyk terwyl anargie en geweld dreig? Weet intelligensiedienste wat March and March se werklike doelwitte is en wie hom en ander soortgelyke organisasies finansier? Dit is vrae waarop bekommerde Suid-Afrikaners antwoorde verskuldig is. Soos gewoonlik sal ons ongelukkig nie die asem ophou vir spoedige, behoorlike en gerusstellende terugvoer nie.

As they continue spreading misinformation and outright lies to generate fear, hatred and division such as the absurd claim that South Africa has 30 million migrants, which would mean nearly half of our population consists of migrants — we must never tire of telling the truth about the deep social and economic crisis facing black people 32 years after democracy. The reality is that unemployment, poverty, inequality, hunger, corruption, collapsing public services, crime and hopelessness were not created by migrants. They are the product of decades of failed economic policies, deindustrialisation, austerity, corruption and the abandonment of working-class communities. Those who cannot defend their arguments with facts resort to insults. We block them. Those who deliberately spread misinformation, sow fear and hatred, or divert discussions away from the real issues confronting workers and the poor, we ignore. Our task is not to win social media shouting matches. Our task is to organise, educate and mobilise. We will continue to expose the lies, challenge the scapegoating of vulnerable people, and direct attention to the real causes of the crisis facing millions of South Africans. The poor must never be turned against the poor while those responsible for unemployment, inequality, exploitation and corruption escape accountability. For those interested in facts rather than propaganda, watch Zwelinzima Vavi’s debate with Africa Independent TV and judge the arguments on the basis of evidence, facts and logic rather than fear and prejudice. Truth remains our most powerful weapon.

This xenophobic violence didn’t start with Jacinta. For years, we’ve witnessed horrific, lethal xenophobia against Africans on national TV while the SA government does nothing but give empty speeches. As we see continental boycotts are finally hitting home. Boycotting SA goods and artists is a necessary wake up call. If the government won't act for human rights, maybe they'll act when isolated by the rest of Africa. 🇿🇦#StopXenophobia

As much as it is valid what he says about systemic budget crises, wearing scrubs means you serve humanity, not just a specific passport.
