Piers Morgan was born Piers Stefan O'Meara to Vincent Eamonn O'Meara, an Irish dentist. After his father's death, Piers took his stepfather’s surname, Pughe-Morgan, later simplifying it to Morgan. In 2004, he was sacked as editor of the Daily Mirror after the newspaper published fabricated photos falsely alleging British soldiers abused Iraqi prisoners. In his 2005 memoir, The Insider, Morgan claimed he left the Mirror voluntarily, a statement contradicted by contemporaneous reports and later accounts confirming his dismissal.
