In the absence of sea star predators, mussel beds expanded into habitats formerly occupied by Postelsia, further inhibiting kelp recoveries. Together, these converging stressors acted as a one-two punch to drive persistent, broad-scale Postelsia declines.

Check out our new study, which reveals the devastating impact of two unprecedented disturbances - a marine heatwave and sea star disease outbreak - on populations of the charismatic rocky intertidal kelp Postelsia (intertidal palm trees!)

@ESAEcology We used data from camera traps, seal pup necropsies, and direct observations to describe 59 coyote predation events in three locations, and found that coyotes routinely hunt seals in one location in Mendocino county (and have for 8 years). Some of our videos, here:

I'm so excited to share that my first dissertation chapter on SF coyotes is out in the #OpenAccess journal @ESAEcosphere. We DNA metabarcoded and genotyped hundreds of scats to explore dietary variation across the city 🧬💩🧪 doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.7…

Our 43(!) coauthor paper on how to build coalitions of support for grad student strikes in life sciences departments is now out in BioScience! We reflect on our experiences as a department during the @UofCalifornia 2022 strike:

@pmanlick @taaltree I hear deer mostly start eating kelp wrack in SE once the snow hits the coastline (and that they eat it somewhat consistently but not a lot).

Super grateful to reviewers, co-authors, funders, and all who helped bring this project to fruition. This was my first time independently bringing a project from imagining/funding to publication so I am proud and excited to share ☺️

However, scavenging rates were substantially lower on beaches with more domestic dogs, suggesting that dogs may be interfering with important sandy beach ecosystem functions.

We found that urbanization strongly influenced the community of vertebrate scavengers on sandy beaches, but that scavenging rates were pretty consistent across urbanization levels.

We used baited camera traps on 17 beaches spanning a gradient of coastal urbanization to assess sandy beach scavenging assemblages and scavenging rates.

Thrilled to share the first chapter from my PhD, with 2 awesome @ucsc undergrad co-authors, is out now in @ESAEcosphere. We found that urbanization alters sandy beach scavenging assemblages and that dogs suppress scavenging ecosystem function: doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.7…
