FDA green-lit a “natural” red food dye called Beetroot Red…that contains ZERO actual beets.
Israeli biotech company Phytolon took a modified strain of baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), spliced in beet DNA genes, and stuck it in giant steel fermentation tanks. They feed the GM yeast nothing but sugar and minerals. The yeast then churns out the red pigment (betanin) like a tiny factory.
No beets grown. No sunlight. No real food.
Then they mix the lab-made pigment with the carrier agent Maltodextrin (which the FDA lets them hide on labels because it’s “incidental”).
Big Food can now legally plaster “No Artificial Colors” and “Beetroot Red” on everything from yogurt to candy while paying pennies compared to real beet extract.
The entire safety approval? A single 90-day rat study. No long-term data. No human trials. Public outrage completely ignored.
This isn’t “natural.” This is precision fermentation deception on steroids — GM yeast poop dressed up as healthy beet color so companies can keep pumping ultra-processed junk and call it clean label.
They know most people won’t notice. They’re banking on it.

A Wendy’s combo is $15.99…'sit down' restaurants used to charge this.
In 2019, this same Baconator combo was $7.50
