U.S. Senator and 2026 frontrunner to become the next Governor of Alabama, @CoachForGov, voiced his support Wednesday for the multi-bill utility reform package moving through the Alabama Legislature. In a weekly call with in-state reporters, Tuberville urged lawmakers to pass the legislative package, saying the current Public Service Commission members who fail to keep rates down “need to go immediately.” “I’ve read this bill, and it’s very simple. We’re in a land rush. Companies are coming back to the U.S., and Alabama, with a heavy focus on moving all over the Southeast. It’s all state energy. It’s for these new industries, and I want to make sure our utilities are being responsible with taxpayer dollars,” Tuberville said. “The PSC isn’t aligned with the state leadership to keep utility rates down, which they need to be, and stop ridiculous regulations from being implemented. If they don’t do that, then they need to go immediately, not at the end of a six-year term,” he continued. “Alabama is one of only 10 states that elect their public service commissioners, and even with that, all three of Alabama’s current commissioners have been appointed, not elected. Fair enough. I was reasonably sure there would be disagreement. As always, I'm open to discussion. I'm not saying the reasons for the bill are bad. I'm saying the bill is bad. My take is based on: legiscan.com/AL/text/HB392/… Lines 5-13 Of HB392 moving PCS from elected to appointed *takes away the right to vote. I'm assuming we agree on that. Lines 141-148 Opens the door to (and almost demands, imo) *appointing industry insiders. Oh sure, they'll be retired or a couple of years removed from a law firm, accounting firm, or regulatory group, but they'll be industry insiders. And the list of potential appointees will be provided by a helpful and trusted lobbyist. Lines 151-154 Requires identity based appointments including race and gender which is the definition of *requiring DEI appointments. It even introduces new Alabama-only identifiers 'rural and urban' which clearly discriminates against suburbanites. In fairness, my take was also somewhat influenced by the co-sponsor of HB392 essentially saying a deal had been cut, but she had heard the voters and would vote no on her own bill. This is the second time the Ivey administration and legislature have attempted to remove the vote of the people. We all saw the result of the State School Board vote, so Alabama voters have been pretty clear on this stuff. There may be even less public support on removing the PSC vote. Other than legislators, almost no one is speaking up for this bill. And some legislators are running from it. Personally, I'd be reviewing the data center bills to see how they'll be affected when HB392 fails. I'd probably submit a bill that says data centers in Alabama must supply 90% of their own energy through renewable resources (so they won't tap into or compete for our natural resources) and pay the usage, construction cost, and maintenance to the utility for the remaining 10%. Then let them figure it out. That's my take. Again, I'm always willing to hear you out and open to learning more.

If I were in the Senate right now, I'd not only vote against making the PSC appointed, I would propose legislation to require the PSC to hold a formal rate hearing to open Alabama Power's books to the public.

@Grayson270 This isn't a partisan issue. Dems and Republicans are sponsoring the bill in the legislature. Dems and Repubs on that committee voted for it and also against. Dems and Repubs are opposing it in the public hearing. This time, it's the people vs the establishment.
