Against Sevilla & Newcastle, Hansi Flick showed us some interesting rotations between the LCM, LB, LW & ST which proved crucial to playing through man-marking systems. Playing behind the opposition midfield line & forcing opposition backline to engage prematurely.

The lack of solutions yesterday from Arteta with this one specific issue was bad. Arsenal played 19 progressive passes against Man City's 181. All the possession between the CBs + GK with no answer for the zonal high press of Man City. Haaland & Cherki's role were simple; prevent Rice/Zubimendi from receiving the ball behind the forward line whilst also covering off angles from CBs + GK. Doku & Semenyo's roles were similar, curve the ball back towards the goalkeeper from the CBs + retreat when needed if the ball was clipped over to the FBs. Bernardo & Rodri's role; more complex. Remaining in this zonal position with metres between them and Rice & Zubimendi was risky but very effective. When they remained just in front of the back-line they made it a 6v4 which was favourable for first/second balls when Arsenal had no answer and resorted to long balls. This exact pattern lost Arsenal almost every single possession of note, it even lost them the ball for the second City goal. An overload in the first phase with no idea how to use it. Not panic stations by any means but a very poor reflection on Arteta given the length of time this issue was prominent for throughout the game.

Rayo Vallecano has been a difficult/awkward fixture for us ever since they got promoted way back in 21/22. I stopped expecting/demanding good performances against them a long time ago. I'm just happy we got the result.

I don't understand why Flick started Joan Garcia knowing he had an issue in the previous match even if it wasn't a full on injury.

There seems to be some confusion; I'm not suggesting Yamal should play as a #10, I'm only saying he should be given freedom to drift centrally from RW. x.com/i/status/19995…

There's no rush for Yamal to make a permanent transition to #10, not yet anyways. Occasional matches as a #10 is the way forward for now. What I do want to see regularly for the next couple of years is Yamal being deployed the same way Messi was deployed from 14/15 to 16/17. Normally, this would be done with an overlapping RB who'll hold width, Messi had Dani Alves in 14/15 & 15/16. However, Kounde doesn't have the qualities to do that. So, instead, it has to be a mobile midfielder comfortable drifting outwide to support Yamal moving centrally. Against Club Brugge, we saw how well him and Fermin worked off each other and how Fermin never got in Yamal's way and was able to consistently drag players away. Alternatively, Dro or Toni could perform that role, too.

Lamine Yamal got two moments to drift centrally to receive the ball, and he created two goals from it. Yet you'll still find Hansi Flick caging him to the touchline in 98% of our matches.

What an incredible opening 15 minutes of the 2nd half. We've absolutely ripped them apart.
