Last week, I was at a friend's birthday gathering at a crowded bar in D.C. and I somehow wound up in conversation with a small group of people about the war in Iran.
One of them fully supported the war and fully supported Trump. I politely sipped my drink and waited for the convo to move on. I didn't really want to talk about this during what was meant to be a laidback evening.
But then he said this: "The death toll has been surprisingly low for our military."
I asked him: "How do you mean?"
"Well, we've had a small number of troops killed, less than ten."
"Thirteen," I said. "Thirteen troops have been killed in combat."
"Right," he said. "That's a surprisingly low number. We've had a low fatality rate."
And, you know, I just couldn't let that go. I couldn't.
"Surprisingly low?"
He said: "Yeah, it could be much worse. We could have lost a lot more soldiers at this point."
I asked him: "Can you name any of the service members who were killed?"
"What?"
"Thirteen service members have been killed. Do you know any of their names?"
There was this long, awkward pause. And then he said: "I know some of their names have been published."
I said: "All of their names have been published. The last KIA was a few weeks ago. Do you know any of their names?"
Another long pause and then finally: "No, I don't."
Let me offer some friendly advice for anyone like this gentleman who is tempted to say this was a "surprisingly low" number of service members killed.
Don't make this observation if it's just a number to you.
Every one of these service members had loved ones, friends, a life back home.
Some of them had kids. Some of them had mortgages and front lawns to mow. Some of them had grills in their backyard they would have been using for parties with people they loved this summer.
Now they're gone, and their families and friends are always going to feel that loss.
You shouldn't be saying something like "surprisingly low" in the first place but especially when you don't know any of their names.
If U.S. military fatalities are "surprisingly low," it shouldn't take you any time at all to learn their names.
Friendly advice.

@highbrow_nobrow I think without doubt the current Republicans serving in Congress are the most gutless and self serving bunch of wimps ever seen. They need to be named and shamed daily.

@maddenifico He's the most unserious person ever to hold the most important office in the administration.

@daviddunn177 Don't just blame Trump. I blame Biden for running for a 2nd term. Had he forfilled his promise of serving 1 term and allowing Harris to run a prepared, supported & unfettered campaign, Trump would NEVER had won a second term and would now be a forgotten entity.

@MilesTaylorUSA I had a dream last night. Trump had become so unpopular that the Democrats took back the House and the Senate making him a "lame duck president"
Oh well! We can all dream.

Not true. The allies undertook the Normandy Landings to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany. You didn’t do it for the British. The British had already ended German dreams of invading the British Isles by winning the “Battle of Britain” before US joined the war.
Furthermore… about 83,115 British and Canadian troops landed on D-Day, compared to 73,000 Americans. The British also provided the majority of the naval ships - 892 ships out of 1,213 - and landing craft - 3,261 out of 4,126.
We have always regarded the USA as friends and allies, and massively appreciate your assistance in securing Europe over many decades, but please do not insult us, or demean yourself, by exaggerating your contribution and ignoring our own.

@maddenifico I don't blame Trump. I blame the 77 million people who voted for him. EVERYONE KNEW he was a fool and a liar who only cared about himself and what he could get away with. It's cost Americans their standing on the world stage.

The White House deleted this embarrassing video. So whatever you do- * DON'T REPOST IT. * Donald wouldn't like it if you hit "repost."
Trump: We can't take care of daycare. We're a big country. We're fighting wars. It's not possible for us to take care of daycare, Medicaid, Medicare, all these things.

@abbydphillip Please ask Scott Jennings why he says "you can't believe a word the Iranians say" bet when they say "we have enough uranium to build 11 bombs" that should be believed. He's an apologist for Trump.

@Microinteracti1 Will somebody please explain to these idiots that NATO is a DEFENCE alliance. It is not there to respond if a NATO country ATTACKS a sovereign nation. Jesus Christ, are all your fucking leaders brain dead?

@Strandjunker Religion is responsible for nearly every major conflict since Roman times throughout the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Radical leaders rewrite their religions to suit there political ambitions. It's a sad world.

@Mollyploofkins I don't blame her for asking. There's about 70 million idiots that voted for Trump, so she only needs a small percentage of dipsticks to pony up.
