If Root feels like a lot, Arcs is the Cole Wehrle game I’d point you to first. It’s a space opera area-control game where your action system is basically trick-taking, so every card is doing two jobs at once: shaping the round and deciding what you can actually pull off on the map. That sounds cleaner than it plays. In the best way. You get big swings, dirty politics, and constant little timing puzzles without needing a giant faction rules dump.
