Context: Border Patrol is struggling to hire new agents fast enough to replace retirees. Some in CBP say they lose good candidates to unreliable lie detector tests, many of whom go on to join other law enforcement departments.

One former agent joined Border Patrol before the polygraph requirement. She left to care for her kids, and had to take two polygraphs when she tried to return to her job. "'You failed bad; like, serial killer bad,'" she recalls the examiner saying. "It doesn't make any sense."

Border Patrol's polygraph failure rate used to be 65%, nearly twice as high as other federal agencies, according to a 2017 AP report. CBP declined to provide updated failure stats, but a Border Patrol union spokesman says it's still around 50%.
