Now and then! 2001-2026 We guessed around 25 years ago late 2001. Same counter, same shelves, same cabinet! On the wall you can see a Pink Floyd Echoes compilation poster which had just been released as well as Robbie Williams Sing When You're Winning. Think it's about time to replace them speakers though!

The new addition to our upstairs shop floor, the blingy-est grammar phone we’ve ever seen which couldn’t look anymore fitting for the room! As modelled by Loki! Just a reminder we are dog friendly, so please feel free to bring your four legged friend along with you for a dig 🐶

We’ve got a new cabinet! When The Musical Box first opened in 1947, alongside 78rpm records the shop also stocked fancy goods & toys, including the likes of Hornby, Meccano, Corgi, Dinky & Bayko which Dorothy phased out in the 60’s with the introduction of Rock & Roll. During our recent renovation, we rediscovered all the shops old surplus toy stock that had been hidden away in boxes for decades and thought it would be nice to have more of the shops history out on display!

Save the date! It’s that time of year again! The 2026 Record Store Day drop list has just been announced and it’s the best one we’ve seen in our 5 years of taking part! This year there are hundreds of artists with super exclusive releases up for grabs on Saturday 18th April to support independent record shops. Head over to the official @RSDUK website to check out the full drop list! Every year we take wish lists for the drop so we have a rough idea what to order. As always it’s a first come first serve basis on the day and we strictly cannot reserve any stock to give everyone a chance of getting their hands on the goodies. If there are releases you are interested in, please comment or message us them and we’ll reply back to you confirming we’ve received your wish list. Please don’t message/comment your wish list twice as it will mess up the quantities. We will be open 9am and would recommend getting there early to avoid disappointment. See you on the day!

Diane and her brother Phillip outside the shop 1953 📷 Frankie Laine's "I Believe" can be seen in the window had just hit number one. The scouse merchant sailors would return to Liverpool from New York and bring back the 78rpm hit records that were big in America at the time for Dorothy & Diane to listen to. The heads up on American releases from sailors allowed Dorothy & Diane to know what to order each month when receiving the advanced release lists. ⛴️

After a busy Christmas period that absolutely rinsed our crates, we’ve been buying collections all January and brought in a huge haul of quality second hand vinyl! We have hundreds of records due to hit the crates this week from Rock, Metal, Pop & Dance. Just need to organise & price it all first!

With thanks to a recent comment on one of our posts, more of the shops history has been unearthed which we were unaware of! We have recently discovered that Beatles manager Brian Epstein used to frequent the shop along with former Beatles manager Joe Flannery to buy records which they did not have in stock at NEMS. We were always aware of Joe Flannery coming in as he’d often speak to my Great Nan Dorothy to promote his brother’s band Lee Curtis & The All Stars. We always assumed Brian Epstein would have visited at some point to check out other record shops in Liverpool but never had the provenance. With special thanks to Helen, without whom we would never have known!

Disclaimer: Although John Lennon & Pete Best frequented the shop in the early 60’s, there are no photographs as The Beatles hadn’t kicked off yet. This was just a bit of fun made with AI. Unfortunately this is the closest we’ll ever get to a real picture!

We’ve been so overwhelmed by the love we’ve received this year and we honestly couldn’t do this with out you all! 2025 felt especially meaningful as the shop received a blue plaque, honouring the legacy of my Great Nan Dorothy, who helped lay the foundations for everything we have today. We hope you all have a wonderful new year & we’ll see you in 2026 with some exciting news to announce soon!
