Distributing Zakat Al-Fitr As Money Zakat Al-Fitr is invalid (if given to the poor in cash) and is also in opposition to the Sunnah. Dirham and Dinar were present at the time of the Prophet and the rightly guided Caliphs however zakat was never given in form of money.

Wakīʿ b. al-Jarrāḥ [d.196H] said: “The parable of Zakāt ʿl-fīṭr to the month of Ramaḍān is like the prostration of forgetfulness to the prayer.Zakāt ʿl-fīṭr makes up for deficiencies in fasting just as the prostration (forgetfulness)makes up for deficiencies in the prayer.”

Ibn Rajab (رحمه الله) said: “O you who wasted his life in vain! Make up for what you missed on the Night of Decree, for it is counted as part of your lifespan.” يا مَن ضاعَ عمرهُ في لَا شَيء! اسْتَدْرك ما فَاتَكَ في ليلة القدر فَإنَّهَا تُحْسَبُ بِالعُمر [لطائف المعارف]

Expiation of Sins in Ramadan for Minor Sins only or Major Sins as well? Shaykh Saleh Al Usaymi: There is a difference of opinion regarding the sins that fasting and night prayer in Ramadan expiate. Two views are held: 1. Only minor sins — because major sins require specific repentance. 2. All sins, including major ones — this was the view of Abu Muhammad Ibn Hazm, Ibn Taymiyyah the grandson, and others. According to this opinion, major sins are forgiven by such acts of worship without the need for special repentance. The first view is the correct one, because it is established that major sins are not removed except through repentance, and no righteous deed erases them without repentance. Ibn Abd al-Barr in al-Tamhid and Ibn Rajab in Jamiʿ al-ʿUlum wa’l-Hikam mentioned consensus that this hadith applies only to minor sins. Ibn Rajab also described the opinion that major sins are expiated by these acts as anomalous (shadh); meaning it is a later view not known among the early generations. (Summarised)
