ICE did it again - released a detainee far from her home without notifying her family. Three days after having an ankle monitor put on by ICE, 31 year old Daphy Michel was found unresponsive at a bus station. She died later that day. Daphy was seeking asylum in the US. Her brother lives in the US and has TPS status. She had a hearing scheduled for April on her immigration case. Her brother was waiting to hear when she would be released so he could bring her home. ICE hasn’t answered questions from Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 about when Daphy arrived at the ERO Pittsburgh office, when she received the ankle monitor, how long she was in custody, and where & when she was released.

Haitian immigrant last seen in ICE custody—found dead on the street 3 days later. Agents drove her 1 hour away from home for processing—then released without notifying her family. Her body was found near a bus stop. Police say she had "significant mental health episode" that landed her in county jail. But ICE picked her up after judge dismissed all charges and drove her 1 hour away to Pittsburgh. "Told her brother charges were dismissed on Thursday. She doesn't come out on Friday. He gets a call on Monday that she's dead," lawyer explained. "It seems perfectly reasonable if you're going to take someone all the way up here and that far out of their element—you could just as easily have driven them back." Daphy Michel, only 31 years old, was living and working in Penny under Temporary Protected Status as a Haitian refugee.

The Trump Administration attempted to make an example of Minnesota during Operation Metro Surge. Instead, Minnesotans set an example for the rest of the country that decency and compassion will always triumph over fear and division.

Legal appeals are normal. What's actually insane is that when someone wins their case, and an immigration judge grants asylum, the government can still arrest the asylee, detain them, and appeal the decision. It's like if the government got to retry a case after an acquittal.
Oilfield Rando@Oilfield_Rando

Our asylum laws are so insane that after an immigration judge finally gets around to denying a clearly fraudulent asylum claim years later, the asylum applicant can APPEAL THE DECISION! Our asylum laws are outdated insanity that must be abolished.

23 years ago tonight, in an Oval Office address, George W. Bush announced the start of the Iraq War. 4,492 American service members were killed in the years that followed. 32,292 were wounded. At least 200,000 Iraqi civilians died. The humanitarian impact was immense. America wasted 9 years and 3 trillion dollars on a war that never should have happened—a war predicated on a lie, pushed by warmongering neocon politicians, and paid for by everyday people. Imagine what that $3 trillion could have bought here at home. Imagine the decade we could have spent focusing on America, our people, our place in the world. Imagine the lives our service members, stolen from us, would have lived. But instead, the president took us to war. Yet another costly quagmire in the Middle East. I voted against the Iraq War. I knew the White House would lie to Members of Congress and voters alike to manufacture the pretext for a conflict—and they did. Now, Iran is shaping up to be Iraq 2.0—new lies, new bloodthirsty politicians, still paid for by American families. Yesterday, we learned that Trump wants another $200 billion for his war. That's after Congress already gave the Pentagon more money than it even asked for in the budget. Enough is enough. It is not too late to learn from the past. Stop this madness. Bring our troops home. End this war.

This doormat Congress is being run by eunuch Speaker Trump’s Little Johnson (R-LA). Folks we have to vote as many of these Republican fools out of office as we can come November. This Congress is anti-democratic and cedes too much power to the Executive.🗳️

@KaivanShroff @magi_jay No claim could make it credible because blaming rape victims is never a credible argument to make, but aren’t our thoughts all going to “was he accused of rape?” He was making the classic argument “She asked for it.” Also makes me wonder about what he did & saw as a bartender.

I cared WAY more about the Nazi tattoo than I did about the rape comments until Platner started *obviously lying* about the rape comments, btw. That's not to say I now care about the Nazi tattoo less. Now I care about both.

@magi_jay In the act of choosing a candidate, by default that means the voters should be judging them. Asking not to be judged is the refuge of the undeserving. I plan on being far more discerning in the future than I ever have been in the past. He ain't it for so many reasons.
