The Pentagon is also waging a war against itself.
The Pentagon was bitterly divided over what to do about Iran, with a restrainer wing and the more hawkish Hegseth in direct bureaucratic conflict, while Hegseth accused three fired senior officials of attempting to leak and sabotage Trump's agenda.
The internal chaos metastasized into the war itself. In the immediate lead-up to the first bombs falling on Iran, prior defense secretaries would typically stress potential downsides to the president — including the economic fallout from Hormuz closure and the limits of an air campaign in fomenting regime change. Hegseth did not play that role.
Instead, Hegseth evolved from a staunch critic of foreign wars to promoter of the Iran campaign — driven in part by a desire to rehabilitate his standing after self-inflicted missteps including the Signal leaks.
The command structure is now essentially Hegseth loyalists all the way down. The JCS Chair is Gen. Dan Caine, Hegseth's handpicked replacement for the fired Brown. The Army Chief will now likely be LaNeve, Hegseth's former personal aide. Hegseth is openly floating ground war options, saying "our adversary thinks there are 15 different ways we could come at them with boots on the ground — and guess what, there are."
The strategic incoherence is striking. Trump sounds like he wants to abruptly leave, Hegseth wants to prosecute the campaign fully, Rubio wants to negotiate with rational Iranian alternatives — none of these messages fully align.
Meanwhile a Pentagon whistleblower who led the civilian harm assessment office (dissolved by Hegseth) says the war has been "carried out recklessly from the start" and that "senior military leadership is bending the knee and carrying out whatever he tells them to do."
The financial angle is also live: the FT reported that Hegseth's broker at Morgan Stanley contacted BlackRock about making a multimillion-dollar investment in a defense ETF holding Lockheed, Raytheon, and Northrop Grumman in the weeks before the war — though the investment ultimately didn't proceed because the fund wasn't yet available to purchase.
The inner circle war that started as a personality/turf clash in early 2025 has now shaped the architecture of how the Iran war is being run. Hegseth purged the restrainers, survived through loyalty to Trump, and is now running a war with no independent institutional check below him. The George firing today is the latest expression of that — removing the last service chief not personally installed by Hegseth.
