- Mass return of Polish decorations is a teenage rebellion. The problem is not the rebellion itself. Without it, no political subject emerges. The problem lies in the quality of the symbols chosen for self-definition. A teenager almost always chooses the figure who irritates their parents the most. An adult chooses the figure who is most helpful in building the future - including, for example, integration into the European Union. That is the whole difference.

President Zelensky took a step backed by the entire nation, including ex-presidents. Poland’s internal political struggles under Nawrocki should not come at the expense of Ukraine-Poland relations amid Ukraine’s struggle against a common threat which poses threat to both states
Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський@ZelenskyyUa

Yesterday, the President of Poland noted that the Order of the White Eagle is not an ordinary award. It is a symbol of the highest trust of the Republic of Poland. It signifies a special bond with the Polish state and the special gratitude of the Polish People. Such a symbol requires not only merit, but also respect for the values that form the foundation of our community. Therefore, if it is considered that this special symbol may remain with Catherine II, Benito Mussolini, and Gerhard Schröder, then we in Ukraine will not argue with that. Ukraine is grateful to the Polish People for their support and cooperation, which play a significant role in the struggle for our and your independence from Russia. Ukraine never forgets solidarity and understands that cooperation between states and peoples in our region is one of the tangible security guarantees for Ukrainians and for each neighboring state. Ukraine will continue to defend itself in this war unleashed by Russia, and we will undoubtedly achieve a dignified peace. Ukraine is grateful to all peoples, states, and leaders who will continue to stand with us in the defense of freedom and who, together with Ukraine, will serve as guarantors of postwar peace in Europe and a new, real security. Ukraine will remain open to all meaningful formats of engagement with Poland in order to try to avoid conflicting interpretations of the difficult and painful chapters of our shared past and to ensure proper respect for all innocent victims of the 20th century. And Ukrainians are doing everything in our power to ensure that Europe does not suffer defeat in this century. I am proud of our people and of EVERY Ukrainian warrior – of the millions of Ukrainian men and women who deserve unquestionable respect for the heroism the Ukrainian People have shown in defending themselves against Russian aggression. We believed that the Order of the White Eagle, awarded in 2023, was meant for the Ukrainian People and our army. That is what was said at the time. Today, I sent the Order back to the President of Poland. I believe the future will confirm the respect Ukrainians deserve. Glory to Ukraine!

If you've ever driven through the streets of any Polish city, you've almost certainly passed a street named after the Home Army (Armia Krajowa). It is worth recalling that in regions with mixed Polish and Ukrainian populations, particularly in Volhynia and Galicia, fierce armed clashes took place between the Home Army and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in 1943–1944. According to some researchers, between 10,000 and 15,000 Ukrainians, mostly civilians, were killed as a result of Polish actions. Poles also lost their lives. We have conducted and continue to conduct exhumations and do everything possible to preserve the historical memory of this tragedy. At the same time, one of the most common street names in Poland today remains Home Army Street. And not once, under any Polish government, has any Ukrainian president interfered in Poland's decisions regarding which historical figures or organizations should be honored. That is Poland's right. Just as it is our right to decide what names to give the battalions of a country at war. Now, regarding the Order of the White Eagle, which Nawrocki stripped from Zelenskyy. In his speech, Nawrocki emphasized that this decision was not directed against the Ukrainian people and did not signal any change in Poland's strategic security policy. However, the following historical figures have not been stripped of the Order of the White Eagle — Poland's highest state honor — despite having occupied, oppressed, or inflicted immense suffering upon the Polish people. ☠ Catherine II — eliminated Polish statehood, effectively erasing Poland from the map of Europe. Under her rule, Russian forces massacred tens of thousands of Poles. ☠ Peter I — occupied Polish territories, oversaw mass torture and executions of thousands of Poles, and destroyed and burned Polish cities. ☠ Nicholas I and Alexander II — brutally suppressed Polish uprisings. Thousands of Poles were executed, imprisoned, or sent to Siberian penal colonies. Polish schools and universities were closed, and forced Russification was imposed. ☠ Benito Mussolini — founder and leader of the world's first fascist regime and a political role model for Adolf Hitler. He supported Hitler during the destruction of Poland in 1939. ☠ Galeazzo Ciano — Foreign Minister of Fascist Italy and Mussolini's son-in-law. ☠ Rafael Trujillo — one of the bloodiest dictators in Latin American history and ruler of the Dominican Republic. ☠ Miklós Horthy — regent and authoritarian ruler of Hungary. ☠ Philippe Pétain — Marshal of France who led the collaborationist Vichy regime. We respect the Polish people. They are our neighbors forever. We share the same direction of development and face the same enemy. But this is our land. We make the decisions here. And no one will dictate to us what we should or should not do — not Poles, not Russians, and not anyone else. If this is not obvious to the Polish president, then a legitimate question arises: whose partner is he really? Perhaps Russia's?

🇺🇦🇵🇱 No one will tell you this story, so I will. A Polish and a Ukrainian political leader were imprisoned in the same concentration camp, met in person, and today streets in Poland and Ukraine bear their names. The Zellenbau block at Sachsenhausen was a separate prison within the camp, directly controlled by the Gestapo. Surrounded by walls and electrified barbed wire, it housed Sonderhäftlinge (“special prisoners”) — prominent political figures held as potential bargaining chips or hostages. Unlike ordinary prisoners, they were kept in single cells, received better food, could wear civilian clothes, were exempt from forced labor, and were allowed correspondence and Red Cross parcels. Contact between inmates was officially forbidden. Among those held there were: • Stefan Grot-Rowecki — commander of the Polish Home Army, imprisoned after his arrest in 1943 and executed in 1944 on the orders of Heinrich Himmler. • Georg Elser — the man who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1939. • Yaroslav Stetsko — head of the Ukrainian State Administration proclaimed in Lviv in 1941. • Kurt Schuschnigg — Austria’s last chancellor before the Anschluss. • Paul Reynaud — French prime minister who opposed surrender in 1940. • Stepan Bandera — imprisoned from 1942 to 1944 after refusing to withdraw the declaration of Ukrainian independence. Now for the most interesting part. Despite the ban on communication, prisoners found ways to make contact. In June 1943, OUN member Volodymyr Stakhiv established contact with Grot-Rowecki and informed him where Bandera was being held. On July 22, 1943, during a brief lapse in supervision, Bandera and Grot-Rowecki reportedly met and discussed the Ukrainian-Polish conflict. Both concluded that the struggle between the Home Army and OUN-UPA weakened both sides while benefiting Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Afterward, Grot-Rowecki allegedly sent a message to Warsaw suggesting that the Polish underground should consider the possibility of losing Volhynia and Eastern Galicia after the war, given the region’s ethnic realities and the need for future Polish-Ukrainian stability. Today, streets named after both Bandera and Grot-Rowecki exist in their respective countries — a reminder that even in one of Europe’s darkest places, dialogue between bitter rivals was sometimes possible.

Kramatorsk is effectively already within the Russian "kill zone": due to the number of enemy FPV drones and "Molniyas," even civilian logistics are becoming dangerous — military The enemy has a quantitative and technical advantage in drones and is constantly improving them to make them harder to shoot down, said Konstantin Melnikov, press officer of the 24th Brigade named after King Danylo, in an interview on Kyiv24. Protective nets and "dragon's teeth" are already being installed in the city to secure the roads. At the same time, there are still many civilians in Kramatorsk, and the Russians are striking at everything that moves. @kyiv_tv

Two of the most noticeable and related differences between Poland🇵🇱 and Ukraine 🇺🇦 are the questions of identity and that of statehood in the context of global history. First, the Polish identity as a distinct ethnocultural group formed centuries earlier than the Ukrainian one (if we are to accept the thesis that a certain degree of ethnogenesis occurred in the Austria-Hungary-controlled area in western Ukraine in the 19th century). Despite the wars (and other negative events) with the Germans, us—Russians, and others, as well as the extreme anti-Russian posturing of the Polish / EU political class, Poles generally do not make that their entire identity, as kids these days say. They have other, positive features to fall back on. In contrast, modern, post-1991 Ukraine gradually turned into Project Anti-Russia thanks to certain domestic forces, particularly from the western regions within, and Ukraine’s foreign Euro-Atlanticist “friends” on the outside. Its entire official identity has been narrowed down into an anti-Russian (and to a lesser extent, e.g., anti-Polish) one, hence the whitewashing of WW2 Ukrainian collaborationism and nationalist atrocities, the removal of all links to pre-20th-century shared culture with the historical Russian Empire, “decommunization” of art and culture (but not of Soviet-built industry and infrastructure!), and so on. It did not have to be this way. Post-1991 Ukraine could have undergone a new, more inclusive wave of post-Soviet ethnogenesis, accepting its shared historical role models (from literature to the Red Army heroes from the Ukrainian region). But its corrupt elites and pro-war segments of the Western establishment chose a different path. Second, Poland experienced the status of a great power in Europe both as the Kingdom of Poland and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Even though Poland’s status has politically diminished in the past few centuries, that experience was formative to its identity as well. Parts of Ukraine have only experienced brief periods of “independence” during, e.g., the early 20th-century Russian Civil War; incorporating large parts of historical Russian lands with ethnic Russians or Russophones inhabiting them for centuries into a post-1991 state with an increasingly ethnonationalist ideology was a huge, though seemingly unavoidable, mistake. Thus, the two countries' weight as political entities is of relevance, too. These two features (not just the current war conditions) explain the current fiasco between Poland and Ukraine, with the state award revocations and returns, such as Ukraine’s doubling down on its whitewashing of WW2-era criminals to its foreign-policy own detriment (but with domestic support).

@2eKamertweets @MinPres @jpaternotte @HenriBontenbal @rubenbrekelmans @NOS @RTLnieuws @Nieuwsweekend #genocide
