Aunty Esther is trending because Jehovah Witness have now ‘updated’ their laws on blood transfusions, 3-months after her death. — It is not what you think. [Full] The update leaked on Reddit, but got deleted. It says, a person can now decide for themselves how they want their blood to be used in medical and surgical procedures. Meaning that their blood can be removed, stored and given back to them when needed. Essentially, they now support blood transfusion, but it must be your own blood. (autologous blood transfusion) Actually it is not a ‘new’ law. It has always been like this, and it was emphasized in the October 15th, 2000 edition of The Watchtower; that a person can decide how their blood is handled during medical procedures. This is the reason procedures such as blood test, dialysis, heart-lung machine use etc are allowed. Has anything changed? No. JW is only reminding and clarifying for the new generation of worshippers. So, unless you have your blood saved in a bank, you would still be stranded, thus the Aunty Esther situation won’t really have changed. 38yr-old Aunty Esther the popular online shopper lost her life in December 2025 over complications from breast cancer and her refusal for chemotherapy which would have needed blood top-ups. Leviticus 17:10–14 “God commanded Israel not to consume blood because “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” And Acts 15:28–29 “Abstain from blood.” And Genesis 9:4 “Do not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.” In essence, they believe transfusing blood = consuming blood, just through the veins instead of the mouth. And it’s a disobedient to God and a moral sin. This policy was introduced in 1945 by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. But it didn’t forbid blood transfusions. Until 1950’s when the church banned blood totally and then 1961 when they officially made blood transfusion a punishable offense. — disfellowship, ostracism, expulsion from the church. Gele is trending because Nigerian youths are arguing which tribe rightfully owns the traditional Gele and Ichafu. Young Igbos argue that the popular flambuoyant “Gele” originated from South East where it is called “Ichafu” before its popularity in the SW and they changed it to “Gele.” Yorubas are saying they’ve always owned the Gele, and what Igbos have is Ichafu; a simpler styled head tie. Interestingly, some old photos favour the Yoruba argument. And equally favour the Igbo argument. Apparently, Ichafu was originally a Chiffon material for scarfs, until Igbos renamed it Ichafu due to a mispronunciation, overtime it became the general Igbo word for all headwear, replacing the Unari. Ichafu is not restricted to one style or material or shape. While Gele has a dedicated material, shape and style. In essence, both Gele and Ichafu are styles of head ties. That is why the argument is intertwined. It’s just like Evangelist, Minister, Prophet, Apostle — all are called Pastors. Gele, Ichafu — Head ties, just different styles. To determine who wore the style first would be almost impossible, because both tribes had thick materials that could be styled flamboyantly. However, Gele became the dominant name for the style following the virality of the Yoruba Owambe culture worldwide. In conclusion, technically, Ichafu is not Gele. Ichafu is Chiffon, a softer fabric. Gele is a stiffer fabric. Gele is a type of Ichafu. Ichafu is what igbos call Gele. Gyale is what Hausas call Gele or Ichafu. Historically Ichafu is not Gele. Who wore it first, remains a mystery.
