Gideon Rachman, the FT’s chief foreign affairs commentator, argues that Trump has no credible endgame in Iran and “has not understood the lessons of past wars for regime change in Iraq and Afghanistan.” Unlike earlier US invasions, Trump appears committed to “regime change brought about by air power alone.” After urging Iran’s forces to “Lay down your weapons” and citizens to “Take over your government,” he promised: “When we are finished… it will be yours to take.” Rachman questions what actually follows. With only 27% of Americans backing military action, he concludes that while the public may have learned from Iraq and Afghanistan, Trump has not.
