@RutgersAltRoute A5: I think finding the root of the problem is key. Oftentimes, bullies have things going on outside of school. Providing counseling is a good start, giving the opportunity to open up to someone they trust #AltRtEd #SafeSchools

@RutgersAltRoute A4: The main challenge for me is when students are quick to label a disagreement or minor conflict as bullying, thus blowing it out of proportion. A learning opportunity is to teach them the difference #AltRtEd #SafeSchools

@RutgersAltRoute A3: Thankfully, the staff in my building are on the same page regarding student safety. With parents, I try to reach out when an incident happens (before students get home, hence story distortion). I communicate via email & Friday folders to establish trust ##AtlRtEd #SafeSchools

During last Saturday's chat we discussed #edtech and opportunities for collaboration. For Q3, reflect on how you engage with your colleagues & students' families (high tech or low tech) #AltRtEd #SafeSchools

@RutgersAltRoute A2: I try to normalize making mistakes, reminding students how to appropriately handle certain conflicts that may seem like bullying, but is not, also keeping some students away from each other #AltRtEd #SafeSchools

To start us off, here's Q1 #AltRtEd #SafeSchools When considering your "practices", think about your - content - classroom management, - the academic/social/emotional skills you are teaching, and - the physical/virtual space of the classroom

@RutgersAltRoute I keep an open line of communication with families via email. I communicate often and show them that I do not only reach out regarding negative behaviors. Too much of that can result in ignoring my messages, so I try to find a balance #AltRtEd #EdTech

@RutgersAltRoute A benefit of technology for me is being able to meet all of my students' needs with suitable tools. A challenge is students misusing their device; however putting a time restraint on when they can use it has proven to be somewhat effective #AltRtEd #EdTech

@RutgersAltRoute Through technology, my colleagues and I are able to share many resources and ideas. As a new teacher, it is very helpful to be able to access a Google doc or other materials. It eases the stress a bit when we all spread the knowledge #AltRtEd #EdTech

@RutgersAltRoute One obstacle that my district is facing is the possible elimination of IXL. While I personally take full advantage of the resource, if a percentage of teachers are not putting it to use, then it can be cut from the budget. We are trying to convince them otherwise #AltRtEd #EdTech

@RutgersAltRoute I think I'd like to start implementing a reflection at the end of each lesson, and maybe switch from uploading book reports online, to oral presentation book reports in the classroom (as an option) #AltRtEd #GrowthMindset

@RutgersAltRoute As a teacher, I want to model positivity for my students. To help cultivate the growth mindset, I use the word "yet" often, so they can view their challenges as opportunities and allow them to comfortably make mistakes #AltRtEd #GrowthMindset

@RutgersAltRoute A simple way to promote growth mindset in the classroom is through encouraging words. Saying "when you learn new things, it helps your brain" vs. saying "it's ok, you tried your best." The goal is to always improve students' understanding step by step #AltRtEd #GrowthMindset

@RutgersAltRoute One opportunity that the growth mindset presents is that it provides teachers and students the skills to grow as learners. The main challenge is really getting students to step away from the fixed mindeset by overcoming obstacles #AltRtEd #GrowthMindset

@Sarah71114983 @RutgersAltRoute I can surely attest to how fast the time goes by. My students actually switch throughout the day, so it's extra stressful making sure I cover certain things before they move on to the next class.

@DaimalyG @RutgersAltRoute Yes, I agree. Consistency is key! Also, some students "act up" just for a reaction, so I can appreciate your strategy, unless as you mentioned, it's distracting to others.

@RutgersAltRoute A5: Schools can fine-tune behavior management by being consistent throughout the school year and for all students. I personally do not react to everything a student does. If it is impeding my other students from learning then it is something I address and speak to students alone.
