Crime victims often struggle with the concept of justice and what "justice" actually means. What I have learned, as the survivor of a significant trauma, is that we have to redefine justice in terms that we alone can satisfy, because if we expect something from anyone else, we risk being incredibly disappointed and feeling as though justice was not served. My definition of justice, which I discuss here, is YOU (the victim- which can be the direct victim, family, etc) doing what YOU can to bring the perpetrator to and through the justice system (if that is the path you choose). Once you have provided statements, testimony, evidence, impact statements, etc., you have done all you can do, and you have created justice for yourself. What happens after you do that- whether the person is charged, tried, convicted, sentenced is all beyond your control. Focus on what you, as a victim, CAN control, and let that define justice for you. Expecting a certain outcome, sentence, apology, or acknowledgement can leave you feeling disappointed and unhealed. 💙
