The Russian invasion of Ukraine is by definition an imperial war, aiming to not only extend Russian control over foreign soil because of military objectives and in the process driving the non-Russian people out there, but also colonizing it and taking hold of the rich resource in these areas.
While the invasion and annexation of Crimea was focused to obtain the hydrocarbon resources in these areas, the invasion of Ukraine's East focus on obtaining the ore deposits, specifically the huge lithium ore deposits, which are crucial for battery production.
There are currently three known sites which contain an extraordinary high amount of lithium ore, plus a fourth site where it is suspected. Those are:
1.) Polokhivka (Kirovohrad region)
2.) Shevchenko (Donetsk region)
3.) Dobre (Kirovohrad region)
4.) Kruta Balka (Zaporizhzhia region) - unconfirmed
When checking my maps, you will see that Russians are heading for the Shevchenko lithium deposits site, almost directly. This is certainly no coincidence.
Though the exact amount of Ukraine's rich lithium reserves at those three sites are a state secret (SBU is keeping those information classified), estimations go as high as 500,000 tons of that valuable metal. It would make up 10% of all worldwide reserves, again, only for those 3 sites. That is substantial to say the least.
Associated minerals found in those lithium deposits are tantalum, rubidium, niobium and other rare elements, which are absolutely crucial for high technology, can be found and shine from another angle why Russians are so hellbent on getting those areas into their clutches. And it is not only lithium. Large titanium deposits can be found in the Sumy and Kharkiv region, areas which also are in the cross hairs of the Kremlin. In fact, there are 20,000 sites with all kind of raw materials which can be found in Ukraine.
You instantly understand that it has never been regarding "Nazis", "NATO" or anything else. It is about resources and money, which Russia needs due to its lack of being able to produce something of worth. It is only another reason why to thwart Russian imperial ambition and remove them from all of Ukraine.
