If you can spend $5K on one DJ, you can pay multiple Nigerian DJs properly. This is about priority, not budget. At some point we need to decide are we building a scene, or just renting one?

If we can spend $5K flying in DJs, but we’re negotiating ₦150K–₦300K for Nigerian DJs on the same lineup, something is wrong with the system.

Let me play for you “Koni Koni Love” by Klever Jay, a four-minute and five-second tune produced by K-Solo and released as the lead single of Klever Jay’s debut album, The Beginning, in the summer of  2008. “Koni Koni Love”, featuring Danny Young and Prince Baton, is a quick-tempo, dancehall-styled, percussion-heavy love story that begins in Agege, a Lagos mainland suburb, where our protagonist encounters Aisha on the street, approaches her, professes his love, and begins a relationship with her. It sounds like a fever dream, doesn’t it?  This reciprocated affection is experienced at such a heightened intensity that one may stumble on love while assuaging the energetic surge of late-teenage hormones. It is the kind of romance reserved for the cinema. A quickening, an epiphany, a sighting that fills one’s psyche with optimism. The street scene could be colour-graded for effect. Dull asphalt, darkened with tar, shone with pipe-borne water. A punishing sun dimmed in intensity to atone for the lived humidity. Waving palm trees would be perfect for the ambience, but Agege can’t sell that, so branded MTN parasols would do.  Agege is a jamboree of working-class bodies chasing after low-fare Molues. Its soundtrack: the howl of a prehensile conductor calling out his destination, Ikeja. So, this boy-girl meet-cute physical-attraction-driven premise of Klever Jay’s Koni Koni Love is a feverish dream, a feathered ambition optimised from its lowly carcass of unvarnished reality. Boy and girl meet alright, but the happily-ever-after eludes them. Instead, there is a tussle dramatised in dance—and the linguistic subversion of the English word Cunning to Koni. This borrows a leaf from the spelling of his sobriquet, Klever Jay, which is spelt with a K. We repeat words to convey emphasis in Yoruba, so it is apt to say Koni Koni Love. It works as melodic ear candy, a repetitive tongue roll, and a consolatory language rocking chair. More recently, this repetition has been deployed, to good effect, in Lojay’s Monalisa when he sings “baby corner corner”. Afrobeats is preoccupied with love, the tactile kind of love that lingers in one's mind is the scarring type. ‘Koni’ has remained in Afrobeats’ consciousness and lexicon. You would hear it in Wizkid’s Fever. Rema tests its limit further by representing it as ‘Corny’, an undercelebrated song. Even Ayra Starr’s sophomore masterpiece is littered with this vocabulary. This may be Klever Jay’s biggest legacy. The jury is still out on whether it is also K-Solo’s. But that song continues to stir its biggest fans on social media—those who have it programmed as an alleyway into their nostalgia, like myself. It used to be the soundtrack to my rides in my hand-me-down Toyota hatchback as a medical student. I danced to this tune at several parties with now estranged women who sometimes return in a glint of memory, a shrapnel of nightmare. Sounds like a fever dream, doesn’t it?
