Rep. Fernandez isn't lying. The SAVE Act defines acceptable proof of citizenship as a REAL ID "that indicates the applicant is a citizen." Standard REAL IDs (used for flying) do not indicate citizenship status on the card—they're issued to citizens and lawfully present non-citizens. Only enhanced IDs in a few states do. Obtaining one requires citizenship docs for citizens, but the card alone doesn't prove it for voting under the bill. Facts clear up the distinction.

I just went through TSA. Had to show my Government ID. Turns out — 90% of America have flown commercial and had to do the same thing. That’s +300 million people. If we can do it to fly we can do it to vote. Both must require absolute security. PASS the SAVE America Act 🇺🇸

You need an ID to board a flight, to drive, to rent a car, to check into a hotel, to pick up concert tickets, and to buy tobacco or alcohol. You even need an ID to check out a library book. Given how routine identification is in everyday life, it’s hard to understand why requiring an ID to vote is so controversial. More than 80% of Americans support voter ID laws, seeing them as a matter of basic common sense. So why are Senate Democrats so stubbornly against the SAVE America Act?
