Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
We're celebrating brilliant minds who've shaped how we understand the world:
• Marie Curie discovered radium.
• Rosalind Franklin's work was crucial to understanding DNA.
• Hedy Lamarr invented frequency-hopping technology.
• Katherine Johnson's calculations were essential to space exploration.
These women didn't just discover things—they changed what's possible.
Here's what they all had in common: they challenged stereotypes. They pursued what fascinated them. They studied and learned to achieve their goals.
At Futurum, we're building games designed so every learner—including girls in STEM—can discover their own path to brilliance. Personalized learning that shows you can be great at math, science, tech, and innovation.
The future of STEM is bright and built to welcome everyone.
Who's a woman in science or tech who inspires you?

Everyone thinks AI was invented quite recently, but fun fact: it’s origins date back over 75 years!
The first artificial intelligence was a robot mouse named Theseus.
In 1950, computer scientist Claude Shannon built a remote-controlled mouse that could navigate a maze, remember its path, and find its way out again. It was tiny, ingenious, and honestly kind of adorable—if you can be charmed by early computing hardware.
But here's what's wild: people were thinking about AI long before we had the technology to build it. Alan Turing imagined intelligent machines in the 1930s and 40s, dreaming of computers that could do things beyond their original programming. The problem? The computers he was working with were literally room-sized and made of vacuum tubes.
It wasn't until 1956 at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project that the field of AI was officially born—John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, and others gathered to explore "how to make machines use language, form abstractions and concepts, solve kinds of problems now reserved for humans."
Seven decades later, we went from a maze-solving mouse to systems that can write, reason, and create.
The craziest part? We're probably still at the beginning.
What's one thing you think AI will be able to do in the next 10 years?

The conversation around AI in education has been dominated by fear.
Will it weaken critical thinking? Will it replace teachers? Will it isolate learners?
These are real questions. But they've overshadowed something equally important: AI is the biggest opportunity education has had in decades.
For the first time, we have tools that can genuinely adapt to how each learner thinks. Tools that can measure what actually works. Tools that can make personalized, evidence-based learning available at scale—not just to students in well-funded districts, but everywhere.
AI doesn't replace good teaching or critical thinking. When designed right, it enables both. It frees up human attention for what matters most. It gives creators the tools to build experiences that were impossible before. It lets educators focus on mentorship instead of busywork.
The question isn't whether AI will change education. It will. The real question is: who builds it, and what principles guide the design?
We believe edtech should be grounded in learning science, designed for real outcomes, and accessible to creators everywhere—not locked behind corporate paywalls.
That's what we're building toward.
What does AI-enabled education look like to you?

Did you know yesterday was a public holiday in Ireland honoring St. Brigid's Day and the ancient Celtic festival of Imbolc?
Halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, Imbolc is sometimes interpreted as meaning "in the belly"—referring to pregnant ewes preparing for new life. It is an ancient Celtic festival celebrating signs of spring emerging from deep cold, and readiness for what's coming. Christian communities also celebrate with the feast of St Brigid, one of Ireland's patron saints.
In the Paddles universe, Drumsna sits in the Irish countryside. As the snow begins to melt and green shoots appear, and the villagers prepare for the world to wake from its winter slumber. Learning works the same way. Sometimes you're in the frozen part—the struggle, the not-knowing. But that's when growth is happening beneath the surface. That's when you're building toward something.
Imbolc reminds us: spring is always coming. Your effort now is seeds planted for what grows next.
What are you planting seeds for this season?

What if "gamification" is ruining education?
Adding points, badges, and leaderboards to boring content doesn't make it engaging—it just adds window dressing.
Real games work differently. In a great game, the mechanics *are* the learning. You don't solve a puzzle to earn points. You solve the puzzle because solving it *is* the game. The challenge matters. Your progress matters. The world responds to what you do.
That's what we're building at Futurum. Not gamified learning. Game-based learning.
There's a massive difference—and it changes everything.
Do you know the difference between a game that teaches and teaching that's been gamified?

Welcome to a new week.
Last week we asked some big questions.
What if learning felt less like school and more like an adventure?
What if students had an environment where they actually thrived instead of just surviving?
What if we stopped fighting against what captures attention and started building with it?
On Penguin Awareness Day we looked at how these adorable aquatic birds thrive in the right environment. Later, we dug into the data on distraction and focus. And we talked about how Quest to Infinity is designed for engagement rather than struggle.
The throughline? Every learner has a place where they flourish. Our job is to build it.
This week we're exploring gamification, the ways we struggle with asking for help when learning, and introducing more lovable characters.
Ready?

According to the latest Education Insights Report, 80% of teachers say they're competing with phones for attention, and more than half of high school students use their phones during class.
It's clear what captures students' attention. At Futurum, we believe those same dynamics can be put to work in learners' favor — by designing educational experiences that are engaging, interactive, and rewarding, rather than fighting against how students already engage with the world.
We can't always remove all distractions. But we can build learning that earns focus.
What actually captures your attention? What makes you want to keep going?

What if learning felt less like “school”…
and more like an adventure you *actually* want to go on?
Most educational games try to dress up boring worksheets in pixels. We're building something different—where the gameplay IS the learning, and the learning IS the reason you want to keep playing.
That's Quest to Infinity.
Have you ever played a game where you got so absorbed in solving a puzzle that you didn't realize how much you were actually learning?

Did you know that although both polar bears and penguins love the cold, they never meet in the wild? That’s because polar bears live in the Arctic near the North Pole, while penguins are found in the Southern Hemisphere near the South Pole.
Today is Penguin Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about penguin conservation and celebrating the 18 unique species of these adorable aquatic birds.
These fascinating birds may look a little clumsy on land, but they are incredibly fast and agile in the water.
It’s a good reminder that everyone has an environment where they thrive — even if it’s not obvious at first glance.
That idea is at the heart of Futurum. Not every learner shines in a traditional classroom, but given the right tools, challenges, and format, amazing things happen.
Just like Paddles, sometimes it’s not about changing who you are — it’s about finding the place where you work best.
Where do you feel most comfortable?

Did you know Wikipedia first launched on January 15, 2001? As the world’s first decentralized encyclopedia, it now holds millions of articles written and edited by people just like you. A powerhouse of shared curiosity and a love of learning.
It’s a great reminder that learning doesn’t only happen in classrooms or textbooks. It happens when we explore, ask questions, and follow what sparks our interest.
At Futurum, we believe curiosity is one of the most powerful learning tools there is. That’s why we’re building games that reward exploration, strategy, and thinking things through — not just memorizing answers.
What’s the last rabbit hole you went down just because you were curious?

Happy Monday, everyone! Have you gotten back into the swing of things after the holidays yet?
We certainly have. We’re fully focused on our mission to help learners feel more motivated and more confident by turning gameplay into personalized learning experiences powered by AI.
Helping us bring that mission to life are the characters from Paddles the Huggable Polar Bear. Last week, we introduced two very special educators: Uncle Liam, the warm and steady headmaster of Drumsna School, and Miss Hoot, the endlessly curious teacher everyone loves to learn from.
Along with Paddles, his friends, and the other residents of Drumsna Village, these characters remind us that learning isn’t just about lessons — it’s about confidence, curiosity, and respecting what makes each of us unique.
That’s why acknowledging different learning styles matters. One-size-fits-all education doesn’t work — and many of you shared what truly motivates you when learning feels like a game.
Here’s to another week of learning, growing, and adventuring together.
